Ianbnet, did you manage to get the FRS running again. Have the same FRS error but have been unable to get this to restart even when have made space on the disk. Have run CHKDSK also. Just need to get a replica accross to the new DC and it will not matter. However not running DNS on the new DC...
If you are printing to a network printer use the NET USE LPT? \\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERNAME and then print directly to that port e.g type c:\autoexec.bat >lpt?
We use a lot of old dos apps and this works for us.
DNS all set up correctly and set to point to itself. All AD components in DNS have populated OK which us usually an indicator that all is well. Most sites are ISDN and the forwarder DNS servers are remote. I though it may be to do with the ISDN line being brought up but have experienced the same...
I have this problem also and the long boot time (up to 10 mins) seems to be to do with the server trying to contact the outside world. However there is no consistancy in the behaviour at bootup as we have 450 servers. Some boot straight away and some take 10 mins. I'd love to know the answer to...
Is the login script being stored in the C:\winnt\sysvol\sysvol\domain_name\scripts directory? This is the equivilent of the Netlogon share in NT and also is shared as Netlogon. If the script is being stored somewhere under the sysvol dir you ned to make sure you are referencing it using a UNC...
I am getting a system error log full of messages generated by Netlogon, ID 5774, Registration of DNS record failed , (load of Active Directory Ldap info).
The setup is a single physical network but with 2 domains , one NT, one W2000. Active Directory clients are W95 / 98 NOT 2000. The DHCP is...
I have had this problem before with the main side effect being the loss of group policy resolution and the opening of restricted desktops. This only happened on around 1% of logins though. In our case the issue was with the 3Com layer 2 switches that were installed. The DNS event log was showing...
I tried to crack this a long time ago with the same problem usig the CSVDE utility. However the csv files were just too complicated and eventually I have reverted to using a mixture of adduser, xcacls and net share. Basically all the util that you used in NT4 and then manually moved users. Seems...
I have an up to date IE and have also started getting the problem intermitantly when connected to the network, dispelling my search path theory. However it always happens when I am not connected.
Are you keeping the login scrips in the netlogon share (winnt\sysvol\domain.name\scripts)? I have had similar problems where parts of group policy were resolved and parts not. The problem was that the AD components were not always being resolved but W2000 workstation was using a cached profile...
I would use the tried and tested method and give each PC a static IP address and make sure you can ping one from the other. The only word of warning is to make sure you have firewalls turned off else the connection is refused. Once you have done this you can map drives etc etc
Cheers,
AndyMac
If it is any consolation I too get this problem. Are you connected to an Active Directory? I only got this issue once I had made the PC a member of an AD and only get the problem when not connected to the network. It is as if a local search path has been deleted and the required files can only...
Thanks for the advice. Tried not installing DNS this but no joy. Found another article detailing the problem but still expects to restore from elsewhere see:
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q258007
I can restore from an image , and do the same again and all works.
This is a large rollout of imaged and sysprep'd W2000 / SQL servers. The servers are to the stage of being workgroup servers when imaged (SQL2000 SP1 is installed, W2K SP2). I run DCPromo, then do not reboot when prompted, but install the DNS service, then re-apply the SP2 and finally reboot...
We have a lot of W2K domain controllers on ISDN2 and 2Mb/s connected sites.
All DC's run local DNS for AD resolution which is set to then forward on to a remote central DNS for resolution of all other queries. DNS is configured 'manually' when installing as it is not always convenient to have...
See Q246679 on technet or run the following and change the startup parameters of MSCTC when finished.
NET STOP MSSQLSERVER /y
NET STOP "COM+ EVENT SYSTEM" /Y
NET STOP "IIS ADMIN SERVICE" /Y
ECHO UNINSTALL MSDTC
C:
CD WINNT\SYSTEM32
MSDTC -UNINSTALL
CD DTCLOG
DEL MSDTC.LOG...
Thanks, nice to know I'm not going mad. There is a resource kit on the MS site but the link was broken and I wondered if it had ever worked. The answer may be to revert back to 2000! Funny that MS on the Technet roadshows kept spouting on about additional Group Pol features that could be set by...
Does anyone know of any administration tools for Active directory that work on Windows XP Pro. When I try to install Adminpak.msi from the the W2000 Server CD a message tells me that it is not compatible with XP.
