sab4you - Good suggestion since every now & then a bug does have to be fixed ^_^ Also, I'm even more cautious than ever just now. I was troubleshooting our router and some of the local IP's were changed. I deleted some of the computers from ZoneAlarm's "trusted zones" while I was at...
Thank you both for your responses. I was truly hoping that ZoneAlarm would prevent any access to my computer - or any programs from running without my permission and Norton would cover the rest. I will just cross my fingers and hope that the updates won't cause any problems.
Is it really necessary for me to install critical updates if I have both ZoneAlarm (free version) and Norton Anti-Virus installed? (I've read too many posts where problems have cropped up after a critical update has been installed and the often seen disclaimer Microsoft includes with its...
cdogg,
Believe it or not, I did that then tried a brand new mouse and keyboard. I had the same problem with the same mouse from another computer. When I tried to install the new cordless mouse & keyboard the computer stopped dead at the F1 because it couldn't pick up the keyboard. CMOS...
There is a major conflict between the HP Color Laserjet 4600 and some of the older HP Laserjets (in particular, the HP Laserjet 5P) even if they are set up as remote printers. We only learned about this after losing the printers folder and calling their tech department for the fix! It is not...
Lram,
Not familiar with ICS but I recently did some surfing and found a post called "Windows 2000 ICS and ZoneAlarm" at the following site: http://www.computergripes.com/ZoneAlarm.html
Hope this post will help you out.
Grenage,
I know that the users of the computers in question didn't change the settings. (They just let it sit there and do it's job ^_^) I just found it strange that the same program settings had changed on both computers. I do appreciate knowing that we haven't been hacked though. Some bugs...
No Wullie, I have the free version. I get the distinct feeling you're telling me that some outside source could be hacking the program. Not good! I'm 100% confident no one in our office would or even knows how to change these settings and they are just as paranoid as I am to viruses & trojans...
Thanks for the link to dshield vesselescape! ZoneAlarm has been blocking my computer from accessing two IP addresses that aren't linked to any of my programs for over a month now. Dshield gave me the detailed information I need. I submitted the information to abuse@att.net.
Have ZoneAlarm 3.1.395 on eight computers (OS is Win98SE). On two of these, I've noticed several times that the ZoneAlarm program settings have changed without any user intervention or upgrade. (The most notable is the change to ZoneAlarm's access from "allowed" to "ask".)...
Have you considered using Freemem instead? I'm not familiar with dRamatic so I don't know whether Freemem is as comprehensive but it doesn't insist on changing your configuration.
P.S. There are pros & cons to these programs since they will free memory but also take up memory themselves.
marcs41: Not quite accurate. I should have mentioned that when you Start>Run you should type "command" first to get to C prompt. Then run the ping or tracert command. When finished, the window will not disappear. Just type exit at the C prompt to return to windows. Have used this...
I have the same problem but I haven't been able to track down the cause. We have six computers - all using Win98SE, all with similar hardware, programs, etc. installed and all using logitech cordless mouse. On only two of these computers, we're experiencing the same problem you are. Extremely...
Recently switched to DSL at our office and Cable at home. If we run these programs in safe mode (without zonealarm being loaded), will this leave our computers vulnerable during the scan or defrag?
P.S. Thank you Mulga for posting this tip - I only hope we can take advantage of this without...
A few more to add to your list of "run commands" that are helpful in tracking down problems with your internet connections:
@Start>Run, enter: ping + the DNS address your ISP gave to you. (example: Ping 209.131.214.4) If you get a "request timed out" message, it may...
Just another misleading message: Watch out for programs asking permission to download that say they are "partners" with Microsoft - best example is hotbar. These programs are normally spyware that would love nothing better than to make sure you get more popups, etc. Spybot is an...
I've been using Zonealarm since it came out on all the computers in our office. The version now running is 3.1.395. Recently, there have been three instances where the program permissions have automatically changed from allowed to ask or deny (including ZoneAlarm's program). It has the smell...
