As per the instruction I disabled the onboard video first, then I installed a new I/O Magic 8 MB 3D PCI card, moved the monitor cable to the new card, booted and installed the appropriate drivers. Everything worked well but now on occassion the cursor is uncontrollable by the mouse, it seems to have a mind of its own and sometimes disappears altogether. Running WIN 98 SE on a Pentium III MHZ system w 256 MB RAM. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try turning of the acceleration speed of the mouse. This option can be found in the mouse settings screen.

If the mouse has been used for awhile, perhaps you have a lint problem. Remove the ball from the mouse and check the x-axis & y-axis for lint. Carefully clean the lint off, then clean the ball with soap and water to remove any grime, then dry it with a lint free cloth or let it air dry. After reinserting the ball, give it a try.

I have the same problem but I haven't been able to track down the cause. We have six computers - all using Win98SE, all with similar hardware, programs, etc. installed and all using logitech cordless mouse. On only two of these computers, we're experiencing the same problem you are. Extremely frustrating! I've tried changing video performance, mouse acceleration, cleaning the ball, putting new batteries in, reinstalling, unchecking "mouse pointers" in Windows setup, etc., etc. Sometimes shaking the mouse will bring my cursor control back but it doesn't last long.

LDOR,

If you happen to get the solution to this problem before I do, please post it here and I will do the same. Still seeking a solution....

indytshooter,
You mention that you have 6 pc's with similar configurations, bit only two are having this problem. If that's right, then take one of the mouses from the working pc's and swap it into the problem pc. If the problem still occurs, then you know it's not a physical problem with the hardware itself.

cdogg,

Believe it or not, I did that then tried a brand new mouse and keyboard. I had the same problem with the same mouse from another computer. When I tried to install the new cordless mouse & keyboard the computer stopped dead at the F1 because it couldn't pick up the keyboard. CMOS showed that I had PNP enabled so I gave up on the new stuff. At least my mouse is recognized (if not working!). Thanks for the suggestion though. In spite of everything I've tried I must still be missing something ^_^
