i installed the via chipset driver pack and everything resolved.

i figured out one thing that may be the problem - the system sees the drives (cd and dvd) as scsi although they are IDE. anyone know how to fix that? i tried the software route, uninstalling/reinstalling and upgrading mobo drivers/dvd drivers/etc.

You should try something like winamp, which has all the function of the WMP, but runs much better. Also, have you checked out what processes are running when the mp3s slow? My old computer used to do that when the memory was getting taxed.
