Hello and thanks in advance for any replies on this....I'm easy with my stars!

I am running a small network with a linksys 2.4ghz router, and all is fine except my one laptop and card (linksys WPC11 ver 3). The laptop, once I put the wireless card in it, makes a static noise every 2 seconds from the speakers. This happens even when the sound card is disabled. It also decreases in volume when I grab onto the end of the card sticking out of the laptop.

It wont connect, and I cannot ping the router.

I am running Windows XP on this laptop as well as the other computers that are hooked up to this router (all of the others are wired).

I have WEP turned off, and I left everything as the default settings in the router as well as the wireless card. I have flashed the router with the most up-to-date firmware and reset it multiple times, all without success.

If anyone can help, please reply to this. If you need to know anything else, just ask. Ive had this card for about 4 months now, and I finally have some time to mess around with it. I'd like to get it fixed.

Thanks!
Ben

Good, hit the Refresh button on the top box.

Highlight the linksys in the bottom box and hit Advanced. The top radio button should be clicked (Any available network...), the bottom square should be checked. Close.
Hit OK.

What does your Wireless Network listing show as its status? It should say Enabled.

Okay, the status now says enabled, but its back to the same thing of not being able to do anything despite appearing connected. The IP settings look ok, but I can't ping the router.

I changed the advanced box options like you said, which was different from what I had before. This change allowed the status to become enabled, at least so it appears.

Thanks for all your help so far, this is frustrating.
Ben

Push the reset button on the router momentarily, just til the red diag light comes on, then release.

It may be that the DHCP table is full from all these retries to the device.

Make certain on the router that Broadcast SSID is not disabled.

If it is, the route will not appear to XP on its list of available connections.

Yep, I just took a look to make sure, and the SSID is linksys on both, and its enabled on the router.

Then you are going to have to use the traditional access method:

1. With the card in place, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove any Linksys entry referring to the card, (if there); the select System, Hardware, Device Manager and uninstall the device.

2. Remove the card and reboot.

3. right-click My Computer, Manage, Services, Services, and scroll down until you see Wireless Zero Configuration. Stop this service. Then change its default setting to disabled.

4. Follow the instuctions from Linksys for installing to a Windows 2000 installation. Make certain the card is not in the machine. Reboot.

5. Insert the card and do as Linksys suggests for a Windows 2000 installation.

6. Go to Control Panel, Network Connections, and check the properties of the card with the Configure button, Advanced: Wep disabled, Channel set to that of the router, SSID same as router. Apply these changes. Check under TCP/IP properties for obtain an address automatic; the Advanced, WINS and enable Netbios over TCP/IP, disable LMHOSTS.

I just managed to get my hands on a compaq Ipaq usb wireless network card, and after setting the appropriate settings, it worked without a hitch!

Anyway, I thank you for the linksys help and I gave you a few stars (in here and in other posts).....
