Sony DVD Burner not burning DVDs after windows XP SP2 install 1

Thanks to anyone that can help....

I reinstalled windows xp with sp2 integrated from peerweb.org. great windows install, except for the fact that my dvd burner, which was working prior, doesnt work anymore for burning dvds. cds burn fine with it.

I have a Sony DRU-500a with firmware upgrade. In nero, when im trying to burn a dvd, nero freezes after file caching is complete. i have to do a hard reboot, since the soft reboot/turn off doesnt work. also, i cant access that drive after i try this. i also tried dvd decrypter to burn, and it freezes as well. the only prog that doesnt freeze is recordnow dx, which still gives me an error after file caching is complete, but asks me if i want to try again. when i click on describe error, it is a generic error, listing basic stuff like try a new disc, etc, which ive tried.

anyone have any ideas? this worked prior to install of new windows. the only difference is the addition of sp2, as far as i can tell. i can post more info if you need any.....

You need to upgrade the Nero program to ver 6.3.1.20. This is a known problem to MS. I hope you have high speed - it's a 27m download.

I upgraded to the new version, which took forever, but still get the same error. The computer now has nero frozen, and i cant access that drive anymore. nero is 6.3.1.20.

I ripped a DVD video from that drive yesterday, so that works, along with the cd read and write from that drive, but the burning of dvds is still not working.

Did you upgrade BOTH Nero updates? The first part is 27 meg, the second part is 23 meg. I haven't done part 2 yet, as it concerns movie making and DVD - neither of which I use.

However, I can't even burn a DVD full of data as a backup, so I don't think this is what will do it.

This is strange, as the DVD burner worked great before the install(burned over 250 DVDr's) without problem. Now it works perfect except the ability to burn DVDs.

hmm.. .tried it to no avail. the upgrade part 2 didnt help. time to do another hard reboot.

please help, as i have about 4 dvds that need to be burned.

I had the same problem and had to uninstall any burning programs I had and then reinstalled the updated Nero. It is working again.

i figured out one thing that may be the problem - the system sees the drives (cd and dvd) as scsi although they are IDE.

anyone know how to fix that? i tried the software route, uninstalling/reinstalling and upgrading mobo drivers/dvd drivers/etc.

Optical burning drives are seen as "scsi". Players are seen as "Atapi" drives (IDE).

You obtained XP with SP2 slipstreamed from a peer network? Are you confident the copy is good?

Leaving all judgements aside...

Nero provides some clean tools that completely remove their burning software.

Once removed, try reinstalling the base Nero 6 and the first update as pointed out earlier by micker377. The other Nero 6 updates are applicable to whatever else of the suite you've installed.

I have got the same problem with a nec 2510 and
nec 3500AG using Nero 6.3.1.20 and a lot of others that i tried. I start to get the feeling the problem is in xp peerweb v2.0

I saw somewhere on internet that there is also a v3.0 of peerweb xp which maybe solved this issue.

I tried it on a differenct machine with the same source peerweb version but a clean system, no different result so far. Very nerve racking.

A friend reinstalled his VIA chipset drivers with the latest and his problem was solved. I did and no succes.
Burning cd's turned out as menntioned not be a problem, only the dvd's do. Maybe it has to do with the driver used for dvd burner? It seems the driver is the same as the cdrom driver, could this be wrong?

I have run into the same issue with my sony DVD burner, sort of, it does the opposite, i CAN burn DVDa but now i cannot burn CDs. I have tried numorus attempts at working this out, any one i call including my proffesor tells me to restore, but i have alot of work and school files on here and would like this to be an extreme last resort, ANY help or comments would be greatly appritiated.

I have a Sony Vaio. I've got the same problem with my DVD burner. It stopped working when upgraded to XP SP2.

What is "via chipset" ?

Ok, I believe I may have an answer for the problem. I have been working for hours and hours, reading loads of forums, FAQs, and the like. I thank all of you for all of you input so far. I am using an internal Memorex 16x Dual-format, Double-layer DVD Burner ( Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1F16 ). I was having all of the same problems listed above (only burned CDs, stop mid-caching, had to hard reboot, etc...).

After discovering this really annoying error, I updated my firmware, used the special clean tool to uninstal Nero, reinstalled Nero, updated my chipset (VIA KT600), made sure I had the most recent BIOS configuration, swapped IDE cables, swapped IDE controllers (from secondary to primary), unplugged all other IDE peripherals, tried K3b in Red Hat Linux (didn't work), made sure the drive worked (used it in my friend's computer - it worked), and then put the drive in my external USB 2.0 drive chassis thing (it worked on my computer then). After all this, the only way my drive was working was in my friend's computer or via USB 2.0 - this was unacceptable...

So, I narrowed it down to some type of controller problem. I checked the configuration of my friend's computer to compare his IDE controller configuration to mine. I was suprised to find that when I went into his Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers --> Seconday IDE Channel (that is what channel he happened to be using), he actually HAD the "Advanced Settings" tab - I didn't. I knew then that I had some kinda driver conflict.

My IDE controller was listed as a "VIA Ultra ATA 133 (dual mode)" (or something like that), so I clicked on update driver - it didn't find anything. So, I "rolled-back" the driver I had and it went back to the standard "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller". I restarted the computer and then went back to Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and updated the drivers on the primary and secondary IDE channels - it found updates for them.

I then restarted the computer and tried to burn a DVD... Well, it indeed did NOT stop at the infamous "caching files started" point - it crashed at another point and wasted a DVD. The error in the log was: "communication error". I was very frustrated at this point. I went into Nero's FAQ's to find out what the problem was now and it mentioned using a better quality IDE cable. So, I found one from an old ATA 133 hard drive that I didn't use and I replaced the current one with that one.

FINALLY!!! MWOOOHAHAHAHA. After seemingly FOREVER, it finally burned a DVD at 8x in 8:16. I was so happy.

I really hope SOMETHING I said above helped you with your problem. One thing I didn't mention, that would almost DEFINATELY work, would be the before-mentioned PCI ATA 133 add-on card. Good luck all!
