Outlook vs Mail Windows 8 w/Office Home and Student

I'll do a +1 for Classic Start Menu. It's usually the first thing I install on a Windows 8 system for someone coming over from 7 or Vista, including my own. If you have a touchscreen, the tiles make more sense, at least on my opinion. With a mouse they're just kind of a nuisance. To each their...

    unable to boot

Thanks for the links, linney, I knew there was a way to recover from a corrupted registry (I've had it happen before, and this sounds kind of like it) so I'll give it a try. I just didn't have much time at work to do a whole bunch of Googling. Plus, I didn't want to bork up my system more by...

    unable to boot

linney: thanks for the quick response. It will not boot into safe mode or Last Known Good either. The symptoms were the same in either normal boot or safe mode both times. I thought about BartPE but I don't have access to another working comuter ATM to make one.

    Reinstalling XP-pro

gbl: the cd's are all the same. ie, one xp pro cd is no different than another, the key is just specific to the system. There is no key stored on the cd itself. At least as far as I've ever been able to tell anyway. You should be able to use the same CD on many different systems as long as you...

    unable to boot

This all started yesterday upon rebooting my computer. It went ok till the part where the WindowsXP boot screen came up, then I got a error message "services.exe - Bad Image The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\msvcp60.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your...

Lots of Hard Drive Activity when doing nothing?

SWilent: If I remember correctly, findfast.exe is a component of Microsoft Office. If you look in your "Startup" folder, I believe you will find it there. I have removed this before with no harmful effects. sj

Does XP Pro support multiple screen resolutions for different users?

I can't remember where I read this, but I'm pretty sure WinXP will only support one screen resolution. Which means, it is global. If one user wants larger fonts or icons, you may be able to set this preference for each user. I haven't had to do this, so I may be wrong, but it may be worth a try. sj

    Browser Hijack-find4u.net

Crap! how could I have forgotten the SysRestore? Too obvious I guess. Thanks for the reminder, and I'll definitely try bcastner's suggestion. That's what i get for trying to be in a hurry and answer a million questions at the same time! Thanks guys, I'm heading over there tomorrow morning and...

    Browser Hijack-find4u.net

I've been commissioned by my sister-in-law to come and fix several virus and malware related problems on their small networked system. The first, her system, had the w32.galil-c virus, norton took care of that. The next, is a nasty browser hijack to a site find4u dot net. I've googled the heck...

WINXP Pro excess cpu usage, no programs open

Thank you all for your time & tips! I think I have found the problem. I got to thinking about the hardware thing. I went into the bios and started disabling things that didn't seem necessary-serial ports, usb keyboard & mouse (don't have either) and when I disabled the "legacy onboard...

WINXP Pro excess cpu usage, no programs open

Thanks, bcastner. I enabled kernel times in the task manager, and it shows the kernel times to be roughly 75% of the total processor usage. I also enabled more counters in the performance monitor, namely interrupts/second, and it shows around 135000 to 138000 interrupts per second. That seems...

WINXP Pro excess cpu usage, no programs open

Hopefully someone out there can help me out on this one. I recently installed XP Pro on my work machine, and it just seemed kind of sluggish. I noticed that it was using anywhere from 40 - 65% cpu even with no programs open. The funny thing is, what the processes tab reports does not line up...

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

Just as an update, if anyone is monitoring this thread anymore, hibernation is working again, and I am not sure why. I recently upgraded the bios (update came out 6-2-2003) and was running bootvis to trace a hibernate & resume cycle in the hopes of finding the offending driver. But, to my...

    Converting wav to MP3

A good one (the one I use at least) is called CDex, found at http://www.surf.to/cdex With it you can encode mp3's from a CD, convert CD's to wav files, or convert wav files to mp3, wma, ogg, and various other formats. It is not too hard to set up, has a good help file, and receives constant...

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

linney: I verified that the BIOS is up to date. I also checked the Event Viewer, nothing unusual there. I ran SFC last night, it didn't help, just caused me to have to re-install the video and autdio drivers. I guess my only other option is just to do a repair, or re-install if things get bad...

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

Thanks, linney. I just updated the bios about a week ago (after this problem). I will check the event viewer. I haven't tried SFC yet. Or doing a repair. But I will definitely keep these things in mind; I think my options are narrowing down. Like I said earlier, it isn't a showstopper, just an...

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

I should have done this at the beginning of the post; here's my system config, in case anyone's heard about issues specific to this mobo/chipset combo: MSI 6570-010 (K7N2-L) Athlon XP 1700 256MB Crucial DDR PC2100 Nvidia TNT2 M64 32MB 1) Western Digital 80GB 7200rpm Special Edition 8MB cache 1)...

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

In response: Hibernation was working even with the newer (bad)video driver, and it was working up until I did the Restore. Yes, it is consistent, failing 100% of the time. Instead of showing the login screen, it just sits there blank. I've gone back to the older video driver with no help.

Hibernation failing now after doing a system restore

OK, here's the scenario: I needed to do a system restore due to a bad video driver. Afterward, I Hibernated my system. After I powered on, when it should have brought me to the login screen, it just sat there blank. When I reset the system, this time I got a screen asking me if I wanted to...

    delta dvd drive problem

Sorry to hear about your drive dying. Thanks for the advice on Delta though. These days with as many choices as we have, there is no reason to put up with second-rate customer service.
