Hi quest00,
Look where the speakers and game controller connect. Look for extra 1/8" female plug next to the speaker plugs. Some are marked, but most use a color code to distinguish which plug is what. There will need to be one for "Line in". If this plug exists (the vast...
The Index.dat does contain a list of cookies even after they are deleted, although the cookies will not be functional. It must be deleted in DOS. If your desire is to stop the cookies from keeping track of your visits, then deleting the cookies is enough. If your desire is to delete all...
Hi Penny,
That is the registry settings for the user who signs on as sb (it sets the policies and preferences for that user). Look on the HDD (do Find for "sb.reg") with all files being shown. See if you can open it with Notepad. It should start with Regedit followed by some...
Not everything that is running is listed in msconfig. The free utility at the following link is Process Viewer. This utility will detect all things running (including DLLs) as well as how much memory it is using. This should help you determine where the loads at. There are some apps that use...
Hi Teamaker,
Disable access to msinfo32.exe (system information utility). This will block easy access to the DX tool as well as other tools accessible through this System Information Utility. If the DX is removed and the DirectX version is upgraded (via a new program installed) it could crash...
HI Teamaker,
There is only one basic way to control what programs you allow a user to use on a Win98 system...through the registry. If your not used to working in the registry, then this could be a little scary do do manually. There are numerous programs that will do this registry editing for...
Hi Greyfoxvt,
The advantage in moving the swap file is that it is a major source of fragmentation that occurs during use. If after defragging, the system still runs slow; then moving the swap file will have no further benefit than the defragging did.
I suspect these machines are in a business...
Hi andielangley,
Since this appears to re-occur I suspect that your Registry is OK. On boot the scanreg will check the registry stored in memory (protected mode). I suspect that you have a bad module in your memory. It is easy to find out if this is the case. Reboot to Safe Mode. Bring up...
Hi Luke,
Partition Magic can hide/unhide partitions without reformatting. However, I don't think (not absolutely sure) you can list the CDROM with a drive letter before the partitions of the HDD.

Sometimes a Win95 was installed by first transferring the cab files to the HDD. Do a Find for "*.cab" (without quotes) to see. If so, then it would be easy to extract the system files you needed from those cab files.

Try Winguard Pro. The free edition does a great job, but limited in use the paid version ($18) gives full functionability. Try the free version out first before deciding on the paid version.

Hi John,
The icon is called a Favicon. Here's how to make the icon permanent without software.
First clean out your cache.
Go to the site and Add the site to your Favorites (this will load the icon into your cache).
Now look in the cache (or do a Find for Favicon*).
These Favicons are not...
Hi Raymond,
Is this a recent thing? Does the PC shutdown OK or does that hang too? Do you get a not responding message? These shutdown problems (all programs or just one) are usually software or hardware related. If this started to occur and didn't before then think what was added/upgraded...
Copy image from clipboard?
On Windows as is:
Open Paint (Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint). When it opens you should see the draw cursor (pencil as pointer)...if not then select it from toolbar on left. With the draw cursor on the canvas, press Ctrl+V (paste). Your image from the clipboard...
Have you tried booting to the 95 machine first (mouse switch set on this 95 machine) and switching to the 2K machine? If this works fine then there is sometime wrong with the mouse simulation it sends to the 95 machine. Since you don't seem to have a boot error (about the mouse) when these...
Older used systems (2nd hand) are cheap and those who couldn't afford a PC before are entering the PC user world. Also they can't afford upgrades. So this old tip needs recycling to help those get the most out of their system.
This tip is for those systems with < 128MB of RAM. Systems with...
Hi Rob,
Extracting files from the CD and replacing files on the HDD in Windows does that...replace the file. It doesn't install it, which means it doesn't replace registry entries or file associations. However if just the file is corrupt, then only the file needs replacing. What problem are...
The bold type of a right click on a file/folder/drive is the default action for that file type. The default action should be Explore rather than backup or find. This is a file association change. I don't know how it got changed in the first place (unless some software installed changed it)...
Your monitors may be going out. Easy to find out if this is the case. After your PC is up and running and starts to exhibit this blurring problem, turn the monitor off with the power button on the monitor....leave the PC on. Wait 30 minutes and turn the monitor on. If the blurring is gone...
I seen this before and never found the cause or specific fix. The system was reformatted and reinstalled and it never occurred again. On that system there was only 1 CD-ROM and it appeared to be related to input (any mouse or keyboard entry).
