AFAIR, the /fix option only automates the older trick of exporting the entire dat to a reg file and rebuilding a new dat from the exported reg (using the DOS regedit for the whole process). Perhaps the old way might offer success. Be certain to reserve a backup copy of system.dat before the attempt.
while wolluf is probably right, I do have this to say:

One thing I have noticed is a disk formatted in Win2k and I think XP will say "NTLDR missing" if in the drive when the computer boots whereas a 9x disk will say "nonsystem disk" or something to that...
hi kantaru
to add to nadiazipper,
this may help you out- The step you are missing is partitioning the harddrive, which must be done PRIOR TO FORMAT. Partitioning is performed by the FDISK utility, so pay attention to that part particularly...
sm9,
Stranger things have happened, I guess- But I REALLY doubt this.
I know of no virus that causes the symptoms your machine exibits, But then again, I may be ignorant. Does BennyA have a NAME for the virus he is referring to? If one can obtain a name, I am sure there is documentation to...
Sorry I missed ya smaxted, Musta been after I scooted.
PS= I have heard that wipe.exe has an 8gig limit- wolluf, can you confirm?
Anyway, you might check out your BIOS in your desktop- often AWARD bios has 0write capability. Wouldn't normally recommend it on a drive that has probs- tends to...
PS Sorry I didn't catch that there were TWO drives- It is odd that two drives would develop bad sectors at the same time. If one is giving you trouble, just fix that one- it is not needed to fix BOTH unless both are ill.
IBM's wipe.exe utility is said to work- although Manufacturer specific would be much better. I use Ontrack or CheckitPro.
Also, note that LLF or zero-write may not solve your problem- After the LLF, re-partition and format to FAT32. then run DOS Scandisk with a thorough surface test. If it is...

Use this to diagnose the drive:
You MAY lose all data
Diagnostic Tool Ver. 6

fjdt_6.exe (143 KB)
Then This if 0-write (Low Level Format) is indicated:
*NOTE* ALL data WILL be lost
Fujitsu Erase Utility
clean.zip (31 KB)...
Something is drastically wrong JBart.
Either your original drive had problems that have been copied to the new one or the copying software did not perform properly.
Only three courses of action seem plausible:
1. If your old drive/install was working properly, attempt the copy again. or use a...
tiwinza1,
I tried to do a low format on it and it didn't do it either
A low level format basically over-writes everything on the drive with zeros. It is destructive to data. If the LLF was substantially completed there will be nothing to recover on the drive.
Hi upchuckies,
From Toshiba's HDD FAQ:

huh. so it is ONLY Diskdoctor and Scandisk? Speeddisk/ defrag work OK?
