I replaced an old hard drive, I copied the old drive to the new one. It works great except when I try to run Norton Disk Doctor. I get an error, Drive C: may not be configured correctly. If I try to run Scandisk the computer locks up.
Scandisk will run if I do an improper shutdown. Any ideas? I have no problems with programs, games, etc...

NORTON-You can screw with it a bit, but really best to uninstall, reinstall Norton. Speeddisk and Nprotect will be having problems too.

SCANDISK-You can try DEL the scandisk.log file from C:\ see if that straightens it out. If not, try running scandisk from safemode once, then restart normal test to see if it is better.

I tried all of these with no luck. In safe mode scandisk keeps restarting. Scandisk still locks up. No luck with Norton.

huh. so it is ONLY Diskdoctor and Scandisk? Speeddisk/ defrag work OK?

Which OS? How was the copy performed? what was wrong with the old drive?

ELIMINATE the possibility of HDD Error:
Boot to clean DOS and run Scandisk or NDD w/ surface. If they can't run from DOS, Try a known good bootdisk to do the same- If it fails from the boot disk, I would suspect a serious problem with the drive.

Why don't you start from the other end. Get a copy of the disk diagnostic from the manufacturer and run it. That should eliminate a bunch of guessing.
If available try SFC. It might show something corrupted.
Copied stuff leads to these types of problems, but that isn't to say that is the problem this time. Ed Fair

I have to say that roamer1 and edfair are correct.
you do need to answer some questions
1. what is the OS?
2. is the file system NTFS?
3. What is the Hardware?
4. Have you used a floppy or boot CD to check the file system?

I am using Windows ME. The drive is a Western 60g, to replace a 20g. I used Lifeguard and it said the drive was fine. No speed disk and defrag will not work also. I copied the drive with Lifeguard.

JBart555,

try the SystemFileChecker as edfair suggested. It can be found in the "tools" menu of the system information utility.

I can't find the SFC when I go to system info all I get is the Windows help and support window, saying page cannot be displayed.

Something is drastically wrong JBart.

Either your original drive had problems that have been copied to the new one or the copying software did not perform properly.

Only three courses of action seem plausible:

1. If your old drive/install was working properly, attempt the copy again. or use a different software to affect the copy.

2. a repair/overlaid install of winME on your current drive

3. Scrub it off and start from scratch.

If your old drive/install was having probs I would recommend cutting to the chase and pick (3).

If (2), realize that not only windows, but other progs, data may be corrupted, so it may be goofed up anyway.

PS= If option (1) from above, SCANDISK and DEFRAG before the attempt.

Note: I think SFC doesn't exist in ME - its incorporated in Msconfig.

AUUGH! I knew tat, too. Forgot it was ME. thx fr the correction wolluf, smah.
