vi etc/rc.d/8/userdef
drop down to last entry
add the line:
route add default 192.168.0.1
(192.168.0.1 represents whatever the gateway is)
esc to beep
save file.
chmod 777 userdef.
reboot and you should be able to ping.

Unfortunately it sounds like the OS is crashing. It may be coinincedence that it happened after a kernel rebuild. Probably will take a reload of the OS. Could be a bad hard drive also.
Usually when I get this error it means you probably need to remove the card and loopback adapter, relink and reboot, then add it back and relink and reboot. I have had a similar error when adding a new card without removing the existing loopback adapter under Network Configuration Manager...
