I have an Sco box running Unix, I beleive Open sserver 5 and I want to change the IP address on it. I went into the Network Config manager changed the IP and subnet, saved it, it relinked the kernal and rebuilt the Unix OS. When I rebooted I wasn't able to ping the new address from a workstation or log in. I also received an error about the Port mapper server with the old IP not responding. So I went to the extreme to change it back to what it was before I changed the IP until I could figure out what was happening, now I can ping it but can't even log into it from any workstations just the server console allows a login. Also, when I made the change I didn't receive that error again. I was looking into this etc\inetd.conf and etc\inittab file and everything looks okay but I amy be missing something. My question is what's files are changing or is there something I need to change to make this work, or is there some other file or area I need to adjust for this to be correct. Any help is greatlyy apprecitated. Thank you.

hi,

it adds the entry to /etc/tcp file uses the ifconfig command

do you have a default gateway set?
what ip address ae you changing it to ?
what is the subnet mask you are using ?

is the interface up

do ifconfig -a

are there any errors in /var/adm/messages file

When you changed it from the old ip to the new one it didn't remove the entry from the /etc/hosts file and the nfs daemon or lock manager resolved your hostname to the old ip address which didn't match the current ip -> portmapper warning.

as far as the ping or login goes on the new ip ->
what was the error message returned? (it never responds with "i'm not working" ;)

Usually when I get this error it means you probably need to remove the card and loopback adapter, relink and reboot, then add it back and relink and reboot. I have had a similar error when adding a new card without removing the existing loopback adapter under Network Configuration Manager. Hope this helps.

Quite often the default route is added manually to the /etc/rc2.d/S85tcp script, which I believe is overwritten every time you change the network configuration. If you find that's the case I'd recommend you create a separate script called S99route or similar to do this, or use S90iproute to do it. Annihilannic.

On reflection, I've encountered this portmapper problem before and I think stanhubble has the correct answer there. It adds the new IP address to /etc/hosts for you but doesn't remove the old one, which is usually above it and takes precedence. Annihilannic.
