I have actually got their mail back and working fine.
Just to clarify - they had set up offline folders from the servers shared folders, mainly .doc & .xls files. I was hoping to be able to get the cached version of these these files back.

You can setup a software mirror from here, although Paganatron is right in suggesting that a hardware Raid is more reliable.
If you setup a software mirror from within XP remember to create an ERD so that you can boot if your mirror fails

Which of your servers are you running as a DNS server?
Do you have a properly configured reverse lookup zone on your DNS server?
Are your machines picking up addresses from DHCP?

Here is the problem.
Server on small site (5 users) died with HDD failure.
Backup was not working properly (although salvaged most data from tape 6 months old)

Hddguru is right, Your drive has failed. Ring Compaq and check the warranty. They will replace the faulty drive. Restore from backups once drive has been replaced.
When doing a ctrl alt delete on our doc Win 2000 server the lock computer button is greyed out and unusable even when logged in with full permissions. Has anyone come across this before? I seem to remember reading that trojans can have this effect but don't find anyting amiss with a full scan.
