WFP Kicks In After Updating from WSUS

I can't seem to find much information about this on the internet, despite the fact that it seems like every Windows admin out there would experiance this if using WSUS. After I approve updates to be installed via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) the updates are installed on the client...

Legacy 16 Bit App Automatically Changes XP Color Depth

Hmm... Well I don't believe the app needs to run in 8bit color mode since it will run just fine after I change the color depth back to 32. It's not a full screen app, just a normal windowed one. The compatibility tab your talking about -- where is it? Are you thinking of a .pif shortcut...

Legacy 16 Bit App Automatically Changes XP Color Depth

I have a problem with an old 16 bit application where everytime I run the app it sets my color depth to 8 bits. After the app is launched I'm able to change the color depth back to 32, however sometimes when the legacy app draws a new window my color depth will revert back to 8 bits. I've...

    L + R mouse click = new button code in X. How?

Thanks Annihilannic. I'm aware of the 3rd button emulation support. I tried to use this for what I wanted to do but it won't work (as far as I could tell). I have a wheel mouse, and I'd like to retain all the functions of the wheel but add L+R click as a 4th button with my own assignable...

    L + R mouse click = new button code in X. How?

I want to make clicking the left and right buttons of my mouse simultaneously in X be interpreted as a new button so that I could then assign a command to it with something like imwheel. Would I have to just make something homebrew or is there already an app for this? Thanks

    Offiline Patch Mangement Issues

Thanks a lot everyone. I'll definantly check out those tools. Well part of it is that I'm just stupid and never noticed the "Required Patches" section in each patch's README. This should solve my problem. I did use the patch cluster but it didn't include patches for non-default packages...

    Offiline Patch Mangement Issues

Ever since I started workin at my current job (~1 year) I've struggled with patch management. Unfortunantly due to the nature of our business it is impossible for me to connect any of our Solaris 8 computers to the Internet. Because of this I've had to download patches one at a time and bring...

Plug in and Use PS/2 Mouse After Boot Time

Vacunita thanks for the reply. I could use a serial or USB mouse and I could plug it in before boot time, but I'm mostly asking because I'm just plain curious about it as I've wondered if this was possible for a long time. Many times I'll be working on multiple computers with no KVM switch...

Plug in and Use PS/2 Mouse After Boot Time

Is it possible to boot the computer without a PS/2 mouse and then plug one in later and use it. If so how would I do this? I've tried plugging it in and going to Device Manager and clicking "Scan New Hardware Changes", but it didn't find anything. Nothing shows up in my devices list in the...

    Printer Output Tray: Group Policy?

Is there anyway to change the printer output tray settings in printer prefrences using a group policy? Or possibly some other way to script a system wide change of this? The printer is shared by my DC. Everyone who it's been added for got the settings it had originally. Since then I've...

Log in as User "X" without changing PW

Thanks for your help, both of you. I figured there must be some way, but maybe not. If not, that's a major downer. I know I can always just change the PW of the user account and then log in as them. But that poses another problem... How do I change the password back to their old one without...

Log in as User "X" without changing PW

Is it possible as an administrator of a Win2003 domain to log in as a domain user without knowing their password and without changing their password? This is trivial in say Solaris - you simply log in as the user but use the admin's password. But this doesn't work in Windows. Any ideas?

    mapping a drive

How are the VMS drives shared? Through NFSd? and if so are you using Multinet, or UCX, etc? Or through SMB, or DECNET?

SYSTEM account auto-removing me from Domain Admins

Thanks a ton for your helpful post. That was the problem. Another company provides us with offsite backup storage and the admins there created a restricted groups group policy for Domain Admins. I'm surprised that Windows doesn't give an onscreen "permissions denied" error when you try to add...

SYSTEM account auto-removing me from Domain Admins

No it's not, it's the only DC on the domain and is not part of a forest, nor does it have any trust relationship with other domains. I added myself to Enterprise Admins just to test the server to see if it would remove me. I also tried other various groups both builtin and custom.

SYSTEM account auto-removing me from Domain Admins

I've got a strange problem with my 2K3 server. I've been the Domain Admins group since I started working there (2 years) and just recently the SYSTEM account automatically removed me from the group. and if I add myself back in it will remove me within probably 10 minutes or so. I've checked...

    FreeBSD Cluster options?

Try checking out MPICH and LAM/MPI. I haven't used them myself but here's the homepages of couple of budget clustering projects based on FreeBSD and MPICH. <a href=http://blizzard.rwic.und.edu/~nordlie/miniwulf/>Miniwulf</a> <a href=http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/cluster/>Mini-Cluster</a>...

Terminal Server 2K3 connection drop over VPN

Is it possibly being trigged by the number of users logging in (or high activity)? If you can, maybe try locking everyone out and leaving only one logged in user to see if it still drops you.

Could not create a server 2003 image using PowerQuest.

Netman and NtmsSvc are two builtin Windows services. It looks like they aren't running and need to be in order for you to perform your backups. Netman is the "Network Connections" service and NtmsSvc is the "Removable Storage" service. There's two ways to start these. 1. From the command...
