Does programmers have a right to keep their source codes and only ...

If I pay you as an employee, then I own everything you make, whether compled or not. If I pay you as a consultant, to write a custom application, I own your code, whether or not you comple it. If I pay you or your firm, for what is clearly a finished product, that you advertise freely and...

I would agree that you are more valuable anywhere but the IT Gulag. Users and key user advocates (read as marketing managers or procduction managers) LOVE individuals who work for them and who understand what the users do and then just happen to LOVE IT. This is how I detooured out of the IT...

Question for guys who are in IT for 10+ years

Here a suggestion based on a 30+ year career in IT At year 20 or so I realized IT is like any pro sport. Some young hot shot who costs less is coming up. So I did start to focus on my "soft skills" as others in this forum suggest. Sort of like a good baseball (but not a great baseball) player...

We are still using 3.0 after a detour We got sick and tired of MS Windows this and MS Windows that, even on brand new name brand hardware. We are a real business that likes to make money and spend it on things that we think add value. Accounting is accounting since 1400 AD whatever and we got...

    Exiting the IT Environment

Crystalized, the programmer actually makes a great point...."How many other people leave IT not because of dissatisfaction but because they want something new and different?" I reply to it because once upon a time, I had a technical staff of roughly 100, and finally to deal with the typical IT...

are DMS and Document system useful in real environment?

GW library ssytem is extremely powerful, if you have client that manges lots of written material and groups it around common tasks. Well known example is found in many law firms use the product for "mail" communications and.....for assembling their cases and related documents. With easily...

    Exiting the IT Environment

Actually I do agree with kHz, and very little of what I do is a commodity. The reason for starting this thread is that I keep running into IT professionals that took their skills and left IT and because they had the IT background.....did very well when they applied that IT background in another...

OK After reading what has been posted so far I'll change the premise.........."All of us have done extremely well in IT world, but...." to ..........at some point we thought we were doing extremely well in the IT world as we were hauling in lots of moola very easily, but after a short time, it...

    Exiting the IT Environment

Here is the premise... All of us have done extremely well in IT world, but.... We never seem to have had the respect, possilby the power, and even the cash that comes from being the person in charge...and I don't mean in charge of IT. Our question is this, can you exit the IT world into...

Are technical schools really all that?

As an employer of technical individuals in all area of IT, my experiece is that in reviewing job candidates, the money spent on technical schools is much better spent on a good community or state college, if you your not wealthly. Focus on getting an education in basics such as english, math...

Is Citrix too much for this?

You could also put "PC Anywhere" on a machine and have it act as a simple remote control machine. Of course, if you have lots of remote users at the same time, this will not work, but for the one or two working from home it is fine and less expensive that a Citrix solution.

Client Company running old sbt Y2K questions

Thanks everybody for the foxpro y2k program tip. It worked like a charm and the system passed Y2K tests. We will gently point out that we wish that the entire source coded Xbase SBT waould be placed in the public domain so we could support this like Linux. This attitude is because we got...
