Have you checked your Sound Control Panel - - I usually find a setting in there that "turns it on"; but I never had to deal with a 5300 running on a modem.
I _do_ recall that they were _not_ one of the great Mac designs.
I routinely switch my Dell flat-screen back and forth between the Dell desktop and Mac Powerbook laptop(s); used to do the same thing with an old Compaq monitor, and still do the same with a 21" Sony at home - - no settings to mess with, so I'd have to believe there's a switch out there...
I'd try the following:
1) Make sure the NumLock (Fn + F5) is off - sometimes causes the keyboard to act differently that one might expect if one doesn't know it's on.
2) Carefully disengage the keyboard, and examine all the connections; make sure nothing else was visibly "strained"...
