Hey, I'm pretty confused. I've got

Thanks a bunch! I just didn't know where to start looking for those answers. My real goal is to install ddd for school onto the Linux OS. I absolutely hate gdb debugger and a visual debugger would be right up my alley. I've been spoiled by Borland C++ and now I'm at a point where the...

Repost: Mandrake KDE Application install prob

Sorry, I to resubmit this because I had a screwed up subject... Hey, I'm pretty confused. I've got Mandrake Linux 8.0 installed, but I can't figure out what I need to do to install new applications. I have the KDE desktop installed. 1.) Once I download a file where should I untar/ungzip the...

i get a black screen on my newly built computer

Do you have an extra power supply? Maybe try a friends. Often in the case you're describing, the power supply is the culprit. See Maximum PC's February article on Repairing and Troubleshooting PC's. They talk about the "classic dead machine". GREAT MAG!!!

Legacy/MSDOS VESA support for GeForce4 card

I just bought this GeForce4 card for Christmas. It works wonderfully, but I would like to be able to play some of the REALLY old games that I have lying around. I created a partition on my hard drive for Windows 95 for this reason. The problem is that the video driver does not work. I get an...

    PPP Question

My first guess would be a hardware failure - RAM. Especially with the messages about "bad area" and all of the memory addresses listed in your post. Memory can go bad for a multitude of reasons, including environment, handling, and alpha-decay.

    93% Memory Utlization Problem..Win 98

I got that argue impulse, but I thought better of it and dug around a little bit. I probably did a search like '' "memory leak" Athlon '', which would pull in some ostensive extraneous variables leading me to the conclusion that Athlons are bad about memory leaks. Actually, I just...

    93% Memory Utlization Problem..Win 98

Besides the msconfig thing, I also had to install and use a memory management utility. RAMidle will keep tabs on your system's memory and free up what you need. If I don't have it installed, I can come back to my PC after a few hours and only have 32 megs free!! That's pretty bad considering I...

    Edit Registry: Any principles?

Why go through all of this - If you just uninstall it from your Programs menu or Add/Remove it from Control Panel, it will remove itself from your hard drive AND your registry. There's a snowball chance in hell that you're going to understand all of the additions that Norton made to your registry!

    WIN 98SE SETUP ERROR SU995003

A dynamic link library file on your Windows CDROM?? Try cleaning your Windows CDROM by wiping it with at clean cotton cloth from the inside edge outward. Sometimes CDROM's get dirty and your reader won't be able to access all of the files. Just a guess.

    Running games in Win2000

Ok, here's the question: If you choose a FAT32 file system, how are games in Windows 2000? Does DirectX have problems running games that are run in Win98? I realize that Windows 2000 was built for businesses trying to set up efficient networks, but I want to know more about it - I've heard...

How Can This Be??? I see you - you can't see me

Is the machine running XP Pro using a FAT32 file system or is it using NTFS?

    Insufficent error message

Insufficient error? That sounds pretty good to me, so what's the problem? Sorry, couldn't resist that. Insufficient Memory? Short Term: Try rebooting your computer. Long Term: Download a memory management program like RamIdle.

    cannot remove device

First, I would try switching your new soundcard to a different PCI port - sometimes this works wonders! You say that you removed the sb card. Do you mean physically or do you mean in Device Manager? If you physically switched them out, Windows should automatically detect the new card, but...

Volume Control Slider will not stay up - No Sound

Yes, Windows may have prompted you (amidst all of the other fun ignorable setup features) for a driver for your soundcard when you installed Windows initially. If it couldn't find one on a disk that you provided it, then it will try to find the best suitable driver that it can to meet the needs...

got hacked, need help w/ exe files

Your best bet is to try running windoctor if you have Norton. If you don't, try running Scandisk from: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scandisk. Hope this helps.

Volume Control Slider will not stay up - No Sound

Fact number 1 : People should not have a PC that cannot play MP3 files or else they need a new PC. :_ I love my music! If I were you, I couldn't just slough this off... Try updating your drivers through the Device manager after downloading a more recent driver from a site like...

    AdAware removed something important . . .

Ok, I found it! I discovered I came upon the same situation as the person leading this thread. After tons of screwing with Windows apps such as the one mentioned above (thank you for the advice, though - it always helps to have new tools) I found that there was really no finding the source of...
