NT4.0 PDC to 2000 Server AD

NikeGuy23 In-place upgrades are not a bad thing, it is always best to start from a clean environment but that is not real life. I have done multiple in-place upgrades for clients, if they are planned correctly everything works as expected.

NT4.0 PDC to 2000 Server AD

NikeGuy23 The first DC in a AD forest is the forest root, you DO NOT want to remove the forest root from your AD environment. If you are worried about the condition of your existing NT 4 PDC I would recommend that you build a new NT 4 BDC with all new hardware. Have this join your domain and...

    Admin Tools from XP?

You need to install the .Net admin tools to administer a 2000 Domain. The .Net admin tools are currently in beta 3, so you will be installing them at your own risk. You can download them from the MS web site.

Installing Exchange 2000 on a production network to learn is not a good idea. Exchange 2000 requires modification to the Active Directory Schema. If you want to learn about how to install and use Exchange 2000 I would recommend you install it in a test bed environment first.

    export data to file?

Banyan VINES is a network operating system, I think what you client was trying to say was. They have a financial system running on a VINES server. I would go back to the client and get some more information before going on site.

    Win2k upgrade

Other important things to remeber when doing any in-place upgrade are to upgrade any NT 4 server running RAS early in the process. Microsoft has some great documentation on the web site for in-place upgrades. When you upgrade a server running WINS the service should be stopped so the upgrade can...

    Root DC in forest failed

Here is a start, I hope this DC was not also providing your FSMO roles. If that is the case you need to check Microsofts Knowledge base for how to bring this DC back into the Domain. Replicating from New Domain Controller to Existing One Returns 'Access Denied'; Log Shows Error 16650...

    Tools?

Javelina work well if you are going to a Win2K and E2K environment. If you have an iSMTP gateway in your environment you might need to monitor that during the mail migration if multiple site are involved
