I've re-installed the shut-down fix from Microsoft many times on my 98 machines. It holds for a time and then the shut down problem returns. I finally established a shut-down procedure for my 98 users that offers a work-around solution.

There was no access to the administrator account set up in XP. Only one user.
when I boot into safe mode and log in as admin I get a blank black safe mode screen. Ctrl Alt Del gives me task manager and that's it.
I tried to restore...but it won't accept a blank administrator password.

After log in the active desktop wallpaper shows but no task bar, start button or icons? What's up with that?
Can access the task manager and access drives and directories through it, but can't find the control panel.

In answer to Wray69...it happens on all excel files on this particular system. All other systems on the network function properly in excel...unless they open the file saved on disk by this machine. Then their excel defaults are overridden.

When viewing the formatting for the workbook the default shows as General. When we change the formatting to Number no decimals etc. and try to enter data in the fields, completely unrelated numbers with decimal places...

Do you have virus protection installed on the new pcs?
I had a similar problem. Once I disabled the virus software at start up I was able to connect to the domain.
Have you had a look in msconfig at the start up?
There are usually several instances of Rundll32 loading.
I found de-selecting all but the last instance resolved my rundll32 issues

Yes keyboard was working at post. No apparently problem in BIOS. Booted to 98 disk and keyboard worked fine in DOS.
Could be socket or mobo I guess but...
I'll force a hardware search tonight when I get home and see if it will find the keyboard.
