Windows 2000 Professional.

Cold started this morning and found I had no keyboard. Could navigate fine with mouse to restart but the keyboard was dead.

Changed out keyboard with another and restarted. Lights on keyboard at boot. System came up with "Now loading Windows" then hung. Hit the numlock key looking for lights. Up came the splash screen. (Hardware error that I can't hear or see maybe?) Once 2000 loaded the keyboard was dead.

Navigated to Device manager with mouse...no keyboard listed. Checked sound card and other add ons...no IRQ conflicts reported and none using IRQ 1

Restarted hoping to see "Windows found new devices" No dice.

Any ideas? First of all why it may have happened and secondly how I might reload my keyboard?

when machine boots to POST screen, is keyboard working - eg, can you get into bios? If so, can you boot from a win98 boot floppy & try it again. If not working, sounds like keyboard socket or connection to mobo is broken. If it is working elsewhere, then have a look in 2k's event viewer?

Try to press F8 when the windows is getting to start ,, see if it works or not ! Mohamed Farid

Thanks Wolluf!

Yes keyboard was working at post. No apparently problem in BIOS. Booted to 98 disk and keyboard worked fine in DOS.

Could be socket or mobo I guess but...

I'll force a hardware search tonight when I get home and see if it will find the keyboard.

I'm guessing corrupted drivers might have removed it from Device Manager.

OR...Maybe it's time for USB keyboard :)

Whoops, sorry.

I did check the event viewer this morning. No messages about the keyboard...as far as Windows is concerned it just isn't there.
