If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I an not sure but try to refresh your iconcache. In win2k all you need to do is right click on the desktop and and select appearance then select the item tab scrolling down until "icon" is selected then chance the size of the icon and select apply ( this will rebuild the icon cache ) if you want to go back in and reset it to your previous icon size. This may or may not be your problem. Dont have XP with me to be more usefull sorry.
