    screaming hard drive?

Sorry I can't upload a picture, the flash reflection destroys the image. I can only say that the mark on the platter is an "x" with a "D" under it, seemingly written with a very fine point pen. The other side of the platter has "01" inscribed with the same marker. These drives evidently came...

    screaming hard drive?

Thanks for all of your responses. I believe we can all agree that the hard drive is a goner...... well it surely is now...I decided to take it all the way down and discovered that the lower platter had an "X" inscribed on it in indelible ink. Could this be a mark from the builder indicating a...

    screaming hard drive?

Update on screaming hard drive: Curiousity got the best of me and I did a little exploratory surgery on one of the drives. Seems the siren noise occurs in tandem with movement of the actuator arm moving the heads across the platters. (High note at center of platter, low note at outer area). The...

    screaming hard drive?

Thanks Wahnula, Seems you have hit the nail right on the head. All the symptoms agree with the links. Thanks again!

    screaming hard drive?

Thanks, It is a consistent sound, repeating exactly like a burglar alarm, with the same cadence and exact order of notes each time, not an erratic sound. Actually sounds just like a burglar alarm. I still wonder, will Apple firmware on the drive interfere with formatting and using it as a PC...

    screaming hard drive?

I have a couple of Travelstar DKLA-22160 laptop hard drives that state "Apple Computer Inc. internal HDD firmware" 2 gb. When I put the power to them they actually alarm, just like a car burglar alarm........loud, coming from the hard drive, not the computer system. I'm trying to use these with...

    Cooling issue

Perhaps the side panel fan is actually interfering with the airflow, causing a vortex. You might want to disable it and give it a try. Good luck, worth a try!

e-Machine hangs at "e-Machine" splash screen

Are you running Norton Anti-virus? I've noticed NAV 2002 has a tendency to cause a hangup on boot and shut down. Just a thought. Good luck.

dvr unit as a hard drive?

Thanks for the advice. I should been more descriptive in my question, but Nelviticus has covered all the bases.(Thanks!)

    Windows 98 slowing down

I agree with Hot, 68% is in the low zone. Try disabling start up items thru Start...Run,...... msconfig....startup, and be sure to leave scanreg checked. You can reload the others by trial and error.

dvr unit as a hard drive?

May be a stupid question, but here goes..........can a dvr box unit be used as an external hard drive for a pc? What would such a thing involve?

    Can't download Windows Updates

As Ski said, you might want to wait a couple of days and try again. But you can order a free Security Update cd from Microsoft, no charge and no shipping fee, for Win.98 thru XP.http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

    Modem Upgrade

In my experience, AOL and the Rockwell modem do not get along well. I recommend that you go to Compaq.com support and download the "softpaq" that is relevant to your modem. It will most likely be listed as a Conexant. BE VERY CAREFUL TO DOWNLOAD THE RIGHT ONE! If this doesn't help, you...

    modem disconnect

I recommend that you go to your computer manufacturer's sight and search for any upgrades or patches. If it is a Compaq, the patch will be a "softpaq" that can be downloaded. Your Rockwell modem may be listed in the upgrade/fix as a Conexant modem. Whatever the brand of your computer...
