no, you don't have to have sap_all. by entering the transaction into the menu in a role, the associated auth objects needed are pulled in, and then you can pick the values to make it work. we don't give anyone sap_all on our PRD system!!

roles are created through the profile generator, and meant to be used to mirror a business role (ie job like a/r clerk)
history - 3.x versions had only profiles with the ability to build 'composite' profiles (like tying all the profiles under a job title for easy assignment to users}

if the sd and mm are not tied to the company codes thru config then the link is broken. link is done through the plants and the gl accounts. your 'sap rep' might have copies of the 'old cd's' that went out with the 3.x versions with helps.

Performance is compromised if you use the 'audit' feature or if you turn on tracing. at Pacificorp we have 2 'instances' where we extend the time out and isolate long batch jobs on that app server. any abap running against the bseg table will hit response time for all other users on the system.
