I prefer not to constrain the WBS by trying to make it fit a product(prince 2) approach or process based approach.
Just ask what needs to be done and build the WBS from there.

Save a baseline of the project. Then add actual start and actual finish dates to the task table. Finally add an indicator for the current date to the gantt view. Now MS Project will show the slippage against the baseline.
Hope that helps.

MS Project tips...
Hi Ed,
Have you tried putting a finish to start dependency between the tasks? Look for the predecessor column in the task table and put task 1 as a predecessor to task 2.
Make sure that task 2 is set to start 'As soon as possible'. Click the advanced tab in the task information box to check...

If you put a 'must start on constraint' on the milestones MS project will warn you if a change to a predecessor task will create a scheduling conflict.

I agree, PMI is a very good qualification and is recognised worldwide.
If you are UK based you may also want to consider APMP. This is qualification provided by the Association of Project Management based in the UK.
If you want to work in the public sector in the UK it is also worth getting...
Looks like you have some good responses to your question.
One thing I am not clear on - are you interested in product development or software implementation?
If you need an example for software implementation you can find one at:

Bear in mind that...
