When you have multiple server location as I do, having images on disk allows me to do be in one location and Ignite any box on my network with out having to load tape.
And yes you can include software and patches in the image.

The file are /etc/shutdownlog and /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log or OLDsyslog.log
In /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log look for a line that states:
inet: Going down on signal 15
In the /etc/shutdownlog:
TimeStamp Halt: (hostname!root)
# sendmail -bq (Kills all running sendmail daemons)
# sendmail stop ( Gracefull kill)
To prevent sendmail from starting at boot, change the
MAIL_SEVERS=1 to 0 in your mail configuration file.
On HP-UX this file is located in /etc/rc.config.d/mailservs
