are both memory modules of the same make and MHZ rating?
acer must have messed up somewhere, as your 2 modules are working and both memory slots are operational...
hi mobileman, sorry for the late reply, had been hectically busy, are you running windows XP? if so follow the steps above that i have previously posted to sort the error message
Right-click My Computer
Click on Properties
Click on the Hardware tab
Click on the device Manager button
Scroll down as needed until you see Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Expand that by clicking on the boxed plus sign in front of Universal Serial Bus Controllers
If it's "Enhanced"...
hard drives would not come with pre installed OS software, reason is that every OS installation acquires information about the system that the hard drive is in, like drives, chipset, cpu other components ect, so if this drive is now taken out and put into another pc with different components...
if neon gold is taking an HDD from one pc and installing to another,then it would not boot up as system configurations
would be different and what should be stored on the hard drive ould be system information of all operating devices, components ect... i have done and tried this out and no boot...
are you on XP and do you have the original disk with you, if so try this, it would detect and fix errors :)
Boot to CD (settings to be changed in DOS mode to boot from CD DRIVE) (sometiems AMI BIOS has the option to hit F8 and it will prompt u where u want to boot from)

is this the error that you are getting "DST Short Test - 'Fail' - code 1000-0146" "msg: Unit 2: DST Log contains previous error"
tell me when this error appears is there a code that follows like the one ive given you above?
DST stands for "DRIVE SELF TEST"
so if it fails this test...
it should not be an issue to power up, external HDD enclosures come with either seperate PSU or powers up via
your USB slot, the USB port be it, USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 will power up the device :)
ive had a nvidia card bomb out on me, with over heating
and causing my pc to reboot consistantly, returned the card and was issued with a brand new one, apperantly the batch were faulty,so some times its just our bad luck we get stuck with faulty equipment :)
USB 1.1 compared to USB 2.0 has transffer rate difference,
so if a USB 2.0 device is plugged into a USB 1.1 slot you get an error, " HI SPEED DEVICED PLUGGED INTO A LOW SPEED PORT "
like gbaughma mentioned USB 2.0 is backwards compatable
