The PE4400 supports only up to 512MB DIMMs, as pointed out in the documentation. As the max amount of memory is 4GB there is no need to use larger ones. When a vendor offers 1GB memory upgrade for the PE4400 they should offer it as 2 512MB DIMMs (as they can only be placed in matched pairs).
As the POST message says this is probably the onboard RAID controller (Adaptec) and it's having a problem with it's cache RAM. Try reseating the DIMM, located horizontally under the CPUs. If no change, contact Dell for a fix.
Assuming you mean a PERC 3/Di this is not a problem. The configuration is saved to the disks which will be read when attached to another controller, and can be saved in the PERC BIOS. Which can be entered by pressing Ctrl-A.
