Thanks for the replies guys...
I think I may try out the NET USE script method.
Probably get to try it out on Monday.
P.S. All the workstations are on a Windows domain...
Thanks again for all the replies.
@lhuegele
Yes, another user account would be much easier of course, but the way the system is setup, many changes would have to be applied to the new user account. All the workstations run various software, including databases, library catalogue systems, etc, etc- all of which have been...
Hi David,
The [shared] folder is indeed on a server - Windows 2003.
All 8 workstations need access to the folder but only one dedicated one needs to have full write access.
Could you explain further about the login script? I think that seems like what I may need.
Many thanks.
Hi all,
There is a setup at one of the sites that I work at that requires certain folders/files to have permissions based on the computer name...
The thing is, all users use the same username 'helpdesk' (business doesnt allow this to be changed) to log on to 8 different PCs. I need to set...
Agreed with kmcferrin- you should be able to retrieve the necessary files with the appropriate software.
The best solution for the future would be to invest in some proxy/web filtering software for your server. With this installed you can both monitor and restrict web categories of your...
If you haven't got any internet filtering/logging software then I would guess the easiest way would be to access the 'History' folder in 'c:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\History' - either directly from the PC or from the server as per below.
Just access the C: drive of the PC...
Yep I've used the PublicIP software for a short while and it does seem to do the job well for a free piece of software. I believe it can be set to work on it's own IP range and with its own DHCP server- which can be different to a range on an existing network for example.
Yep, I had the same problem with a laptop that had a fresh [re] install. Everything was working correctly except the sound drivers.
In my case, the Windows Update kept installing the wrong driver from the sound card. So I went to the manufacturer site to download the correct one.
I thought by having all PCs on the same workgroup, it would just make it easier to browse the group of computers and then accessing any shares - if direct mapping of these were not created. Of course there are many other ways to access the shares too- just this way it being in a graphical...
Yep, in agreement with the other two posters...
I infact had to remap users mapped network drives so as to leave a couple of drive letters free (from the next one proceeding any local drive) for when removeable mass storage devices are used.
Just ensure that all PCs are members of the same workgroup name and all should be fine.
I think you need to create the same usernames on all the PCs so as credentials are not required when trying to access shares. This would also be necessary in order to set security permissions on the...
The only option that I have ever seen in IE is to enable/disable all file downloads and not individual file types.
It is more common to use some sort of web content filtering software to achieve this.
Well if you are sure no password was ever set, then I'm sure the only other thing it can be is a blank/no password?
On the recovery console, trying just hitting return and see if it goes through.
We've just got an OU unit called 'Admin' and have the adminstrator and a few other accounts in there.
In that OU's group policy settings just enable the 'block inheritance' and select the 'No-overide' option (this prevents any other policy overriding this one).
Have a look at this:

Changing the System.adm file allows you to modify exactly what drives (in any combination) to hide/restrict. This will then appear in the GP drop down list.
You just need a very basic understanding of binary.
I have modified...
Well I think I answered my own question...
Updating the firmware from 1.03 to the latest 1.10 resolves the active directory issues.
Hope this helps you and others.
@Kitesurfer1:
Have you got it set up with Active Directory too?
Like I said, I've had the 'problem' from new. Well I'm assuming it was working for you as it should initially then? That would eliminate and firmware issues for example.
Hi all,
Just recently purchased a Buffalo Linkstation Pro 500GB network hard drive. It works well in general but I am having problems accessing the shares when AD permissions are set.
Everytime I try to browse or map to a share, I always get prompted for a username and password; then when I do...
