ok RH7.3 is really old. You could always download suse10. Works great; got a lot of drivers for the newer version's of graphics cards coming out now. to check the version of KDE you can always type rpm -q kde. I think its something like that. You can also type man rpm. This will list a bunch of...

Very barbaric and not functional. Ive done a bit of searching. I was using Generic text drivers but then I installed the specific drivers for those printers and it works. Im now busy setting them up to print through our Informix server so the printer spooler on the TS doesnt wait for the jobs on...
Hi
I have printer servers connected to our terminal servers; I busy setting them up but the problem is when i print to a specific printer it comes out gibberish; the printer on lpt1 prints fines but the lpt2 printer is funny. the printers are exactly the same and the drivers are the correct...
oh yes; I dont know exactly how that is setup but you can acces it like ftp://192.168.0.19; If it is on a network at your place. Uploading I think you would either need a ftp client or use the command line.

I know this is off the point but why not run an apache webserver on the linux box and then instead of accessing or downloading your files through ftp command line you access it through the webserver's ip address. like so http://192.168.0.19; it then displays a index page on the machine. Or you...
The booting issue is correctable. I find it easier and quicker sing the distro installation cd to redo all the configs for the system again. You could log in when it gives you the shell prompt; you have to try and unmount your root partition so you can remount it with read/write mode but that is...
I had the exact problem; I had a SuSe9.2 hard drive and then I put in a new hard drive to test my remastering knoppix and then when I plugged in the SuSe9.2; got the message saying the root partition is in read mode and needs to be remounted. I did a repair with the install cd and it worked. It...
If it is a clean box then boot up with the linux cd and redo the partitions. You'll need the following:
linux OS(/dev/hda1)
Linux swap(/dev/hda2)
Xp partition which XP will create when you install it.
You'll create the first 2 with the linux command fdisk; there is a gui for it on the...
If you just want to try linux before jumping in with all the installation bit; download yourself a copy of the greatest live cd ever. Knoppix v5 or Knoppix STD(security tools distro). Then you can even remaster it but thats a whole different thread all together...
why not use the tar command??
tar -zcvf /var.tgz /var/*
as an example. it will just make a .tgz file with the contents of the directory.

Your NTFS drives should be mountable on your linux distro. Open up a console in your linux and type "man mount". This is a manual page which will describe how to use this function. Usually something like "mount -t NTFS /dev/hda3 /mnt/hda3". I cant remember off hand now; Im at work. For your SaTa...
Have a look at remastering knoppix; rebuild a knoppix live cd distro, you create a compressed filesystem which all can fit on a cd or a dvd. If you want a boot up cd. or you can do one better; on your linux box at the console; type "man mkiso" this will give you a descripton on the mkiso app...
see if you can boot up with a live cd (knoppix, gentoo live) and see if you get funny errors. if not copy the iso over onto the hard drive and change the installation source to the partition. eg /dev/hda1 or /dev/hdb1; what ever. see if that will help.

Ive checked out the remastering knoppix; very informative. Ive downloaded K5 now; but I think K3 will do just fine. Have you remastered a knoppix cd before?? if so with which packages and what "category" is it in.

Well for those of you who want to know how to fix it. Put in that installation cd and do a repair.
