Its looking like some of my problems were down to a corrupt user profile. Creating a new user account and copying the My Documents across has rectified the worst of the crashes. I've still not finished testing, but its looking good so far.

I couldn't replicate the issue in safe mode, because when I tried to run Word, it told me it couldn't find a license for my application, it then exited. Having said that, explorer didn't disappear when Word exited there.

Thanks James
It did find some issues which I let it fix, but the issue remains.
Any other ideas would be welcome. I'll post back here if I find anything more. Currently looking at items in my windows logs and googling anything that looks odd.

In a similar vein to 2ffat's post, I've also had major issues following the November updates.
When I run an Office application, the Windows desktop and start menu disappears, and I have to open task manager (ctrl shift escape, run explorer.exe) in order to get my desktop back.
Its Windows 10...
I've also got addins that won't work properly from firefox 57 (its the integration with KeeFox). As a precautionary measure I have switched to the Extended Support Release (ESR) version of Firefox at home to allow this to continue. Its main aim is for corporates, but it will work well for this...
Latest update:
A review of the system and application logs found some indicating disk errors and a recommendation to run chkdsk /f. I did that, including a restart to fix locked files. A fair number of those were under C:\Windows\WinSxS which explains to my mind why dism followed by sfc...
Update:
Something has made a difference, but I can't put it down to the Powershell script. MMC snapins such as computer management and event viewer, which did work when I started doing this, now don't. Weird.

Further information:
Memtest86+ didn't find any issues. No specific tool on UBCD for Samsung hard drives, but CrystalDiskInfo 7.0.5 in Windows gave it a clean bill of health.
Windows key + S also doesn't work.
I've also tried the reinstall of all apps via an elevated Powershell command prompt...
Thanks Goombawaho.
A clean boot with all non MS services disabled still gives these errors, but interestingly AVG Free started itself which I put down to an entry in the Registry Run keys triggering a start of the antivirus service.
Uninstalled AVG free, rebooted, tried again and got the same...
Hello
I've been having rather a lot of problems with my dad's PC of late. Some of these are covered in detail by blog posts on a myriad of other sites, some of which I have tried and have not helped here. Any assistance in either pointers for further diagnosis or ideas would be welcome...
Its because you are clearing the DB definition after the first entry. Get rid of the first "Set DB = Nothing" and it should be fine.
However, this can be further optimised. You should be able to combine both fields into a single update as they are on the same table with the same value...
Use VBA to check for a positive value returned from DCount with the same criteria as your main query?
If >= 1 you cvan then send your email, otherwise display a "No matching clients found" message to the user.

I had a similar issue many years ago on windows 2003 servers whereby someone would just close the Remote desktop client rather than properly logging off. I remoted to a different server with the same OS and a shared administrator username/password, then used the terminal services MMC snapin...
I'm currently trying out Spybot anti beacon as a means of preserving settings between updates. That it disables some of the "phone home" items is a bonus.

Hello
Lets break this problem down into smaller pieces, and put it in more general terms rather than through Access and VBA:
1. Could application X on machine A detect if application X is running on machine B (or C or D or E)?
2. Could application X on machine A start application X on machine...
