In Mandrake 9.0 and 9.1 the sound levels are set to zero by default. Open up Aumix and crank up the volume and you'll have sound. I find it works best to set the levels to max and the use your speaker controls to set a comfort level.

I checked through the archives of my LUG and a user there reported a similar problem the he was able to fix by updating the bios of his Nvidia card. If that's not possible for you, then switching out the video card would be the next best thing.

Do you get sound as root? If so, open /etc/groups and make sure that all users are listed in the sound or audio group (its exact name differs by distro).
