    Problem with sound

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll see what I can do in terms of sending my unit in for repair rather than get a new laptop. I'd love getting a shiny new one, but I'd much rather stick with the configuration that I have. Is there anything I can do in terms of trying to repair it myself? Obviously...

Upgrading to Pro from XP Home Edition

You can try backing up your data with Knoppix. It is a live Linux CD and it boots straight from the disc. If you have a USB thumb drive you can easily back up the data, or you can try and back it up to an online email account or something. http://www.knoppix.net is the link It is completely...

    Problem with sound

Yes I do still have the warranty on the laptop, and I have it for another year thankfully enough. Two things, however. I'd really like to avoid sending my laptop off to be repaired for any amount of time. Though I'm sure Dell would do a fine job fixing it, I'm also sure that it would take...

    Problem with sound

I have the strangest problem with my sound. I have a Dell laptop, and no matter what I hook into the speaker out slot, all I get is a soft high pitched noise. I've tried speakers and headphones, and I get the same result. However, on a pair of speakers that I tried, I turned the volume all the...

    Right click causes explorer errors

Whenever I right-click a file either on my desktop or in an explorer window, an error message (not xp error reporting) pops up and says "explorer.exe Fatal Application Exit" "Failed to load application texts. Immediate exit". Only the OK button is present on this error message, and once I click...

Internet fails for a short time, comes back on, solutions?

OK. Thanks for the response. I will be sure to try out browsing during one of these lapses. I can confirm one of them by checking the status of an AIM screen name after a lapse to see how long it says they have been online. The other I will have to try browsing and pinging. Thanks again!

Internet fails for a short time, comes back on, solutions?

Alright I will try that when it goes offline again. Gotta wait for another lapse... And to try to answer one of those questions, I cannot browse the shared network folders of either of the 2 PC's while these lapses occur, though I have never tried pinging them. I did try pinging yahoo and...

Internet fails for a short time, comes back on, solutions?

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop with a built-in mini pci card (also Dell, 802.11g). It communicates fine with the router (D-Link Xtreme G Model DI-624) almost all of the time. However, occasionally, the internet completely fails. My AIM and ICQ cannot connect, neither can my IRC. I cannot...

Problem accessing web config for DLink Extreme G router

I am having a problem accessing the web configuration for my D-Link Extreme G router. The model number is DI-624 for anyone that wants to know. I recently upgraded the firmware on it to version 1.25 from 1.12. Some of you may think I used the wrong hardware upgrade for my revision, but I did...

Log.txt suddenly keeps appearing on my desktop even when deleted

Well, doesn't look like anything new is there. Would it be helpful to list all of the entries?

Log.txt suddenly keeps appearing on my desktop even when deleted

A very strange thing happened to me. Sometime in the past few days, a file called log.txt appeared on my desktop and keeps reappearing after deletion. It appears to log the programs open and possibly what commands they are using. Does anybody know what the deal is here?

    Networking problem with LAN

I have 3 computers on a LAN. Two are running Windows XP (one Home and one Pro), and the other is running Windows 98 SE. Anyway, the problem is that the Windows 98 computer is not seeing any of the computers on the network, though the other computers can see it and it's files on the network. I...

Well, after a simple restart, everything worked fine.

Unable to browse, but can still AIM and ping

I thought it was over, but obviously not. After a few hours of browsing, the internet somehow got disabled again. Same as before, all of the other items work (eg AIM, etc). All of the firewall rules are gone as well. Anybody up for it?

Unable to browse, but can still AIM and ping

Right after I sent my last post, I checked in my router settings, and sure enough port 80 was blocked on this computer. I was try to run a web server through my router and the firewall didn't let me, so I tried to open up port 80 using a firewall rule, and obviously this messed up my internet...

Unable to browse, but can still AIM and ping

I do have a firewall. However, the computer I am typing on right now is behind that same firewall and has a perfectly fine internet connection. It has to be something with the specific computer. Any ideas?
