ps -ef shows command in parentheses

When I look at my running processes using ps, I notice that sometimes the process name is enclosed in parentheses like this: myself 921768 921834 0.8 03:39:00 ?? 0:05.24 (myprog) What does this denote? I can't find any reference in the man pages that explains it.

lpstat shows "waiting for xerox6100 to come up"

The culprit was a missing entry in the /etc/hosts file on the print server. The two machines I'm printing from have been grouped together into a sort of virtual cluster for "ease of administration" and it was this IP entry that was missing from the file. All I have to do now is to...

lpstat shows "waiting for xerox6100 to come up"

I have now come back to my printer problem, and this time the error is as above. I have found loads of documents through Google and the like, all divided into two camps. The first concerns postings that exactly describe my problem but with no solution, and the second concerns those which tell me...

    lpd doesn't start

Thanks be to you, mr biker! It seems that renaming the lpd.lock file did the trick (courtesy of second URL you gave me). Now I'm waiting for lpc restart to come back and tell me that all is well. If it does, I'll be in the same trouble I was in when I killed the thing in the first place - which...

    lpd doesn't start

I tried that (good thinking!) but it didn't make any difference. I have now managed to locate the lpr log file and it says this: locking failed: Operation would block To me, this message is about as much use as a chocolate teapot! Does anyone have any idea what it might mean?

    lpd doesn't start

I killed it, and now it won't start again! I know I should have used the "/usr/sbinlpd stop" script, but I didn't know about it. Now, when attempting to start the thing using the same script, I get the message saying everything's hunky-dory, but there is no lpd to be found on the list...

783955:a.out: /sbin/loader: Fatal Error: Cannot map library libsyscomm

Can anyone explain to me what this means? I have consulted the man page for the linker, but to no avail. I'm trying to build a trivial .so library to call from inside Oracle using their makefile. The .so is created, but I get the above error when I try to call it from my test program. How can I...
