Okay, so the issue is DNS. I would recommend getting someone in who knows what they are doing. It is too easy to make mistakes and even a talk-through might cause issues elsewhere. DNS errors are generally quick and easy to solve once you know what you are doing but tamper at your own peril!

Check the card is reporting a MAC address and that it isn;t simply 0s. Could be a BIOS issue an flashing this could shake it clear.

Simply run the XP CD again but without removing the old install. All missing files will be replaced and everything should return to normal. As soon as possible replace your hard drive since it sounds like this (or your IDE port if that is what you are using) is lossing sectors.
