Try this process:
1. Extract a block of data:
chdev -l rmt0 -a block_size=0 <Enter>
dd if=/dev/rmt0 of=/tmp/block bs=128k count=1 <Enter>
2. Determine the blocksize of the block of data:
ls -l /tmp/block <Enter>
3. Try to determine the format of the block of data...
I have seen this occur when the root filesystem (/) is full ... sometimes after root user does a verbose mksysb and smit.log gets too big. Might be worth checking from maintenance.
Hi Karan,
It is also possible to do a mksysb if your filesystems
are on rootvg and then restore that mksysb to reduce the
size of your filesystems. This is an alternative if your
current configuration doesn't have the space to create a
new filesystem to copy the files from the old to...

As Mayne55 mentioned, can be caused by files that...
Cindy,
What is the "<<" supposed to be doing?

Thank you,

Here's the address for IBM's Adobe document on "Positioning AIX Version 4 in the Marketplace." Hope this helps...
Specifically to the 0511-449 error message, when we have encountered this problem it has been due to "garbage" file names, e.g. when you do a listing of a directory, you might see ?'s; the output may be not in columns, but scewed; or the such. (I call them "garbage" because...
