using Outlook 2003 and find that my inbox will not automatically synch when going off-line. I have had no issues prior to the upgrade - XP. It will work if you use "Synchronise this folder" which then gives you the correct amount of e-mails in your on-line and off-line...
There are a few things out there like perfman and NETiQ products but I am looking into this myself and trying to decide which is the best product. If you have found one since posting I would be interested.
Circular logging will remove these files but has its drawbacks - there are articles on these drawbacks. I would prefer ensuring you have good backups as this will also remove the files and will assist in a more complete restore if required.

Exmerged all mailboxes out (the new exmerge utility is much better) and then back in again. Still finding messages with "path not found". Built a new box in the same site and moved (not exmerge) all mailboxes to this new box. All working fine with no "path not found"...

The answer is yes what you want to do is possible and I have done it. There are a few steps you need to carry out eg. build the server with same SPs etc on the same network, different name - do not join the org but use the exact (directory names) names...
