Slow response from mapped network drives

We have a Windows 2003 server acting as a domain controller, file server and DNS server. Occasionally when opening a network drive in Windows Explorer or opening an application on the network it takes about 20 seconds for anything to appear. At other times the response is as quick as you would...

    Backup with shadow copy

We are using the Windows 2003 Server backup program to run scheduled backups which are run via a batch file. These backups are failing regularly. I believe this is due to a problem with the backup job trying to use shadow copy, because when it works there are entries in the event log showing the...

Office 2003 upgrade does not retain add-ins

I have upgraded from Office 97 to 2003 but the add-ins that were used before are now not automatically loading in Office 2003 and are not showing in the list of add-ins. I can add these again manually but I do not understand why all user settings are not being retained after the upgrade. The...

Restoring server from Windows 2000 backup

I have tried restoring a full system backup of a Windows 2000 server to a different machine. This backup consists of the C: drive and system state and restores in full without any errors. However, after the restore has completed I cannot install drivers. I get an error message "You do not have...

    Windows 2000 SP4 upgrade fails

I am trying to upgrade a domain controller to service pack 4 but it fails with the message "an error in updating your system has occurred" and you can click OK or Cancel. If you click OK it undoes the changes but I have tried to update to SP4 twice with the same results. The errors...

    IBM Thinkpad A20m external keyboard

I am trying to use a standard PS2 PC keyboard with a Thinkpad by connecting it to the PS2 port and using a mouse on the serial port. Most laptops I know of can support externally connected keyboards but this Thinkpad fails to recognise it. Does the Thinkpad just not support external keyboards or...

    Netmeeting desktop sharing

Since installing Microsoft Certificate server we are now unable to open a Netmeeting remote desktop sharing connection from any PC to the server. It comes up with the error: "The person you called is unable to accept Netmeeting calls" and it does not prompt for a user ID and password...

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

I reset the security settings to default level for all zones apart from the Internet zone (i.e. Local intranet, Trusted sites and Restricted sites zones). Now when I set the correct Internet zone security settings on the BDC and import these into the group policy these settings are now retained...

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

It is the default domain policy and it is set to have no overrides (see previous post).

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

Yes. The server is functioning normally otherwise. The only problem is with the application of group policies.

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

Since no one has responded here is some more information. I downgraded the browser on the BDC thinking this problem was related to the last IE upgrade, but it is still not properly holding settings or applying these to clients. It did to begin with when I downgraded the browser and then forced a...

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

The policies do have no override. The settings that are applying were never configured in a group policy anyway. However, manually applied settings are still reverting back again. The puzzle is that what I set manually is not retained and what I set in the group policy is not being applied...

Internet Explorer settings and group policies

We use group policies to lock down a lot of the settings on desktop PCs. However the Internet Explorer security settings from the domain group policy seem not to be applying correctly on the backup domain controller. It also seems that any client authenticated by the backup DC picks up its...

    Password change error

I can answer my own question. If you use "net password \\server_name" instead of using the domain name it works. Presumably because the client knows about the server, or can locate it by IP address, but does not know where the domain controllers are.

    Password change error

We have just set up a WINS server which allows Windows 9x clients on one subnet to find Windows 2000 domain controllers on another. Everyone can log on successfully from either subnet. However clients which are not on the same subnet as the domain controllers get an error when changing a...

    Services For Macintosh Files Disappear.

We had a similar problem view because we were running a product called Undelete Server on the Windows 2000 server. This keeps a backup copy of all deleted files in the Recovery Bin but it conflicts with SFM. Mac clients cannot see files after they have been replaced by a newly saved version but...

    File replication and offline folders

I want to keep a reasonably up-to-date replica of user data on a backup Windows 2000 server but do not know the best way of doing this. I have looked into client-side caching - using online folders to retain a local copy on the backup server - but cannot fathom how to get it to work. Can anyone...

    Password changes on downlevel clients

When a user has changed their domain password on a Windows 95 machine the user cannot then log onto the domain from a Windows 2000 machine using that password. The password is not recognised and the correct one is definitely being used. However if an administrator resets the user's domain...

    Printer paper tray selections

I have a problem on a Windows 2000 client PC when using a network printer which is shared from a Windows 2000 server. When printing from Word if you choose a paper source other than the default one the application will ignore this and just print to the default tray defined in the printer...

    NO ONE CAN LOG ON

I have the same problem with NT4 workstations logging onto a Windows 2000 server. It happens after either the PC or server is restarted but if you wait and try to log on again after 10 minutes or so it will work. I have no explanation why this keeps happening. It is not just with new computer...
