We have just set up a WINS server which allows Windows 9x clients on one subnet to find Windows 2000 domain controllers on another. Everyone can log on successfully from either subnet. However clients which are not on the same subnet as the domain controllers get an error when changing a password using the command "net password /domain:domain_name". It comes up with "error 2221: the user name cannot be found". Why can it recognise the user ID to log on to the domain but not to change the password? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

I can answer my own question. If you use "net password \\server_name" instead of using the domain name it works. Presumably because the client knows about the server, or can locate it by IP address, but does not know where the domain controllers are.

You need to install the Active directory Service on the 98 clients, the problem is that win9x always has to speak to the Primary domain controller (or PDC emulator) when the passwords are changed, because the DC is in a diffrent subnet the logons will be with a local one not the PDC emulator that they need to speak to change the password.

So either install the DS client of the clients folder on the server cd or move the pdc emulator role to the domain with the win9x machines. Mac [pipe]

Glad to be of service.
