Make sure that no-one is running batch updates at nignt ie: long unattended reports. this could be a cause. Also try to have the tape cleaned or fresh tape could do the trick or try to retention the tape a few times then try it out

I've found out what the problem was: the client was booting from unix.old !!! and whatever i was doing had no consequences... We really have to look out for the smallest details.. Thanks gang!

After straight upgrade from 5.0.6 to 5.0.7, my only scsi tape device which was on ad160 adaptor=1 (not 0), id=2 does not work.
the devices rStp0, nrStp0 etc. exists in /dev,
mkdev tape does not see the device but when i try to add a new one with the correct parameters, it refuses to...
I'll check the log on Monday when i'll be back at the office.
By memory, I saw a lot of request not filled. Then i simply issued a /etc/rc.d/init.d/inet reload and it did the trick.
I am using DHCP and TFTP to remote boot network pc.
My TFTP service keeps dying after awhile (after one or 2 pc's go up. Any idea why it would do so? I can alway restart inet manually or by cron but I would prefer to have a fix for this since it is not supposed to die.
I have received it on Thursday, It is basically SuSE base with SCO adding their own stuff to it, I have installed it Friday, but did not have a chance to play with it yet.
But it is fresh and really really looks good. The installation is a breeze. I'll update this thread as I play with it.
