Windows 2000 group policy doesn't work!!!!

You cannot apply a GP to security groups in containers, only to users. Instead of creating groups for your users, create OUs and place your users directly in there, that should do the trick! Also check your blocks and overides as you are than applying the default and your own policy on them.

    Running Tasks

I think you've got it! The task runs a small executable which forces the user to logoff. The idea I had was to schedule this task to run after x amount of idle time, thus logging off users who forget to do it themselves. This is a real headache, because w2k server only has the option to...

    Last Username

Another problem! oi oi oi My Group Policies are running perfectly, except for two areas: I've set the "Do Not Display Last Login Name" to enabled, but it doesn't work. I've also set folder redirection for My Documents on some of the OUs, but it doesn't redirect, instead it just...

    Running Tasks

I'm sitting with a 9 client, one Win2k server network. The network is running perfectly, but I'm having a problem with task scheduling. I've scheduled tasks to run on all the clients and they only run if the task creator is logged in. If anyone else logs in, the taks apparently still attempts...

    Problems changing client passwords

I've had similar problems with Win9x. There is apparently a fix available from Microsoft, sorry but I don't know exactly where or what it's called! Running Win9x with 2k server will inevitably lead to such problems and I would suggest upgrading your workstations to 2k Pro or XP if you want to...

How to logoff users when their session time expires....

Cool, I've used this option on all my stations, works like a bomb! It can be a problem for big networks with many client machines though...

    win2000 login

Um. There's an option in yout local security policies to not require ctrl-alt-del for login, but I wouldn't advise it. You can get rid of the whole login process by telling windows to always assume a certain user is logging in, read through your local security Policies more carefully.

How to logoff users when their session time expires....

You're right, "Log off users when logon time expires" only applies to their specified logon hours. There doesn't seem to be a way to achieve this with GPs. What you could try doing is: Step one - Download the console from here: http://pobox.com/~stevemil One of the files included...

    Rundll32 Logoff

I have been trying to force user logoffs using rundll32.exe along with user32.dll the syntax I used was as follows: "rundll32.exe user32.dll,ExitWindowsEx 0" When I use this command, nothing happens, no response at all. The idea I had was to schedule this command as a task which runs...

Group Policies. Please save my sanity!!!

Of course they were in the same OU, I don't think this discussion would have gone on for so long if they weren't! Welshguy was right, my problem must be DNS. I am quite new to the world of W2K server admin and I am currently trying to find out how my DNS should look. When I installed server...

User Accounts Locked Out on Win2K

If you open up the properties on one of the accounts created for these computers in the AD, you'll find the option to allow pre-windows 2000 logins from that computer. This doesn't always work though and you might want to consider upgrading workstations to 2000 Pro. I hope this helps!

Group Policies. Please save my sanity!!!

Thanks for all the help. I took a look at my DNS & DHCP setups before leaving work today and I reckon I'll get it right (eventually). What is really stumping me was that the Policy was being applied to my account (administrator) and even when logging into clients, obviously this is very...

Group Policies. Please save my sanity!!!

Thanks for your help, I think I'm on my way to solving the problem and I guess I still have a lot to learn. I saw that I still had an old forward lookup zone specified, so I deleted it, perhaps that was one of the problems. I'm not sure how to run replmon and gpresult (doesn't work from start>run.

    Computer Management Problem

When I try to manage a computer on my network, I get the message "Computer <name.domain> cannot be managed. The network path was not found." My network is running perfectly otherwise. I tried installing adminpak on the computer I wanted to manage, but it still wouldn't work. I...

Group Policies. Please save my sanity!!!

I still can't get it going. The restrictions I set were under "administrative templates," does this mean they only apply to the administrator? And if so, where I can I set the same restrictions for domain users?

Group Policies. Please save my sanity!!!

It's late and I'm tired. Here's the score: I've set up a new OU in Active Dir and created a group in the OU. I've added all the users I want to restrict to this group and set a Group Policy for the OU. I also made sure that the group had permissions to read and apply the policy. Than I...

Please point me in the right direction.

Thank You. Obviously, microsoft.com was the first place I looked, but I need something written for people who know what they're doing, but need more direction than just stating the obvious. Anyway, I found a great edoc on www.pdabookstore.com search for "windows 2000 server." It...

    restricting users from installing software

If you need your users to be power users, than try blocking write access to the Program Files folder (right click on program files, select "Security" tab and click on "advanced"). As most programs attempt to install here by default, this could solve 80% of your problem. Of...

    Forced Logout?

In one of the networks I administrate, users often forget to logout. Is it possible to force a logout after x amount of idle time? If so, how?

Please point me in the right direction.

I would like to know if anybody knows of a good FAQ for setting up Windows 2000 server with info on domains, scopes, etc. I'm new to this and having some info with me would help, I'm using a license from my university and they could not provide me with a manual. Thanks!
