Disk Error
It might be a problem with the Master Boot Record on the disk.There is something you could try: Slave the drive over onto another system and run a diagnostic such as Norton Disk Doctor (part of Systemworks 2003)This will repair any corrupted files and hopefully allow the disk to run again.- andyman34

Recover deleted NTFS partition?
A good easy method to solve this problem is to slave the drive onto another system and run Norton Disk doctor from Symantec which is part of the Norton Systemworks 2003 suite this will sort the problem in no time at all!!- andyman34

Hard drive stoped working
Is the drive spinning up freely or making any unusual clicking noises? If the fault is a mechanical one with a seized platter it is possible to get it running at least long enough to transfer data from it. You can try tapping the drive on a hard surface such as a table a couple of times...- andyman34

Western Digital provide a disk diagnosis utility named DataLifeguard which is available for free download.It should be able to tell you what your problem is.Another good utility for partitioning/formatting a secondary drive from within windows is ontrack diskwizard2003,a free version of this...- andyman34
