Zero'd drive with KillDisk, now can't reinstall XP

I've installed the HD on a more comtemporary P4, and I can now install my upgrade copy (pre-SP1) of XP Home on to it. That sounds like a BIOS issue, as BCastner said. I can't upgrade my BIOS, as the version I have is the latest ABIT has on their site for my board (TH7-RAID). If I can get my...

Zero'd drive with KillDisk, now can't reinstall XP

I do have the latest Bios, though it's dated 4/14/03. I updated it when I put the HD drive in and it wasn't recognizing it's full size. The update corrected it.

Zero'd drive with KillDisk, now can't reinstall XP

My XP Home installation had a lot of miles on it, so I decided to Killdisk it, and start fresh. I wrote the zeros, and started the XP install. When it got to the partitioning, I set the size and NTFS, and it started the format, but quickly stopped. I don't remember the exact message, but it said...

    Hard Drive Upgrade Problems

An update- I ran Partition Commander 6, but it didn’t seem to offer any means to use the unallocated space. I ran Diskpart.exe on my D: partition (just data), and it appears that it took the 21 gig of unallocated space and added it to the D: partition. If I look in My Computer or in Disk...

    Hard Drive Upgrade Problems

I’m upgrading my 80 gig hard drive to a 160 gig Western Digital drive. I used WD’s included tools to copy from the 80G to the 160G. During the copy, I remember seeing some kind of message about it enabling large drive support (or some similar message). When it finished copying, the drive...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

I installed Virtual Desktop Manager, and in the process of trying to configure it, got an Active Desktop error message. It gave several scenarios as to what could have caused it. One of them had to do with displaying a web page on the desktop. It took me to Desktop Properties -> Desktop ->...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

Things aren't exactly as I first thought. Here's where I am at- If I have no icons on the desktop, I can see my wallpaper ONLY when "Show desktop Icons" is checked off. If "Show desktop Icons" is checked on, I get the blue screen. If I have 1 or more icons on the desktop, my desired...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

You were right- adding any folder to the desktop would bring my wallpaper back. As suggested, I did the "arrange Icons by" and "show Desktop Icons", and it brought my wallpaper back for good, regardless of weather there's any icons on it or not. I don't really understand what was at work here...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

Linney- I ran SFC, but the problem still exists. I'm not sure where to look (or what to look for) in services. Can you elaborate? Thanks- Matt

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

It looks like I've "sort of" fixed it. When I removed the Luna theme file, I cut and pasted it to the desktop, just so I could keep track of it. It was when I pasted it to the desktop that the blue screen disappeared. I just tried to cut/paste it somewhere else to get it off my desktop, and the...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

Well, I've stumbled across a solution to my problem. And I do mean stumbled. I went into C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes and removed a theme file called Luna, and the blue screen went away. I want to thank you all for your help. I really appreciate that you took the time to reply to my problem...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

Before this problem cropped up, I was using the non-classic XP style view. After playing around with the taskbar's links toolbar, the picture that I use as the wallpaper of my desktop became hidden behind a blue screen. If I go to Display properties - Themes, the picture shown is the wallpaper I...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

I thought of System Restore too. For some reason, it shows no restore points. I did some disk cleanup the other night, and I'm guessing I lost them then. Restore is turned on, and I can now create a restore point, but there are no points prior to my current problem. I've changed the wallpaper...

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

As best as I can tell, I've got them set at their defaults. The same situation exists though. The wallpaper is hidden behind the blue screen.

    Wallpaper is "not on top"

I was playing around with the Taskbar's Links toolbar, and now all I have for a wallpaper is a blue screen. If I refresh it, my old wallpaper will briefly flash before the blue screen returns. If I select the "Classic Start Menu" in the taskbar properties, I get my old wallpaper. When I switch...

    XP Reboots during CD burning

Astroflux- Thanks for the suggestion. My unexpected reboots are not limited to just CD burning. I get them in Photoshop as well as when copy/pasting big files. SMAH- The power supply theory sure made sense, so I replaced it with a 350 Watt unit. Unfortunately, it didn't solve it. I've backed...

    XP Reboots during CD burning

A last (I hope) update on this. The problem did not go away after reloading the OS. My MB uses RDRAM, of which I have 4 128mb sticks. If I remove 2 of them, the problem goes away. If I remove the remaining 2, and replace them with the first 2, it still runs fine. If I put all 4 back in, the...

    XP Reboots during CD burning

Some more info on this end- I'm not overclocking, and the exact same thing occured using Roxio as well as Nero. It also happened using XP's burning program. It also happened 2 other times when I wasn't burning. I was copy/pasting big files. Here is where I'm at- Smah's point about heat or PS...

    XP Reboots during CD burning

If I'm copying a cd, it'll happen either during the reading of the original cd or during the burning of the new cd. It doesn't seem to happen at the same place every time either. It doesn't happen all the time, but it occurs more times then not.
