NT 4.0: disappearing network protocol (TCP/IP)

Be careful do not jump to fast.... You said that the problem is that the DHCP host could not be contacted. This tells me that the client is sending the braodcast to attemp the lease. Look at network layer 2 issues first. Do you use cisco switches? or any switch that run Spanningtree? If...

    DNS problems

Next time it happens also use nslookup. look and store the dns that it tries. Some isp use load balancing on the DNS and this can be a problem. If nslookup times out then the DNS might be overloaded. Try to start a ping and if you get a NSLOOKUP timeout yet no drops in the ping I would say...

    Catalyst 4006/WS-X-4013 Slow

Stephen, Just a note, Some NICs do not properly negotiate to full 100. I would set the Cisco to auto and try from the cleint to set 100 full. Also there was a problem with NT using full 100. I think this was fixed but not sure. Also make sure you do not saturate the servers. Most clients...

4006's / PC's not renewing IP's at end of lease

Just though of something: Spanning tree takes around 30 seconds to activte the port. Winblows tries to init its ethernet very early and could fail to get to DHCP server automatically. Chances are that the user will do a manual request after 30 sec and the request would get to DHCP server...

    Switches as hubs

Just a note for the pile, The 2900 only needs an IP for management via the ethernet ports. This is why ever switch comes with that rolled console cable. We run them without the IP for security issues. Carry my laptop to them if needed. That is all thanks

    Fault tolerant LAN

Hello tw500, First off the answer to spanning tree is YES. Spanning tree will look for any and all loops in the network. However there are many more things to consider when setting up a fault tolerant layer 2. Some are: 1. Is a ring star or mesh the best layout? Keep in mind that when a...

    DNS not resolving correctly

What version of Irix? Older Irix used the /etc/resolv.conf for hostresorder but newer releases 6.5X now uses /etc/nsswitch.conf. You need an entry in the HOSTS line of nsswitch.conf that states files DNS. Hope this helps good luck

    null route

If I understand your question, you have some IP's that you used a static route that placed any packets that were trying to get to them into the vapor. To remove, Look at the config for a route that points to interface null 0 and remove it. Should look for entry like: ip route 10.10.10.0...

Adding a route path in a Cisco 3600 router

My opinion is that you need a route map. This will allow the router to examine either the source of the packet or the destination (or both) to make a route choice. You can then have packet that come from the NT source route to the Linux and all others by way of the Pix. Read on cisco web...

    Two DHCP servers.

You need to understand that dhcp uses broadcasts to get the attention of the DHCP server. Any DHCP server can respond to the broadcasts and will do so. You might be able to set up custom port assignmets. So that only the correct server will actually hear them and respond. I would just move...

    Alternate ways of load balancing?

If you are using equal links and do not want to use EIGRP then why not use OSPF with packet switching? good luck

    DHCP setup on 26XX

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios121/121newft/121t/121t2/dt_dhcpc.htm#43408 Cisco has a new feature to allow this to work. You go to the interface and instead of giving it a static address: ip address 10.10.10.2 255.255.255.0 you use the command: ip address dhcp...

    Serial frame-relay question

Yes, You can ping the interface on the other side of the PVC. It sounds like you have checked all the L1/2 stats. You can do some debug on ICMP but be sure BOTH sides have routes to get the request and reply packets routed properly. With regards to subinterfaces the routing is still an...

Cisco 675, NAT and changing IP problems

Hello, I have simular situation at home using Road Runner. The problem is that the Cisco routers do not use DHCP client software to obtain the IP. My solution was to put a linux box between the router and the ISP with two ethernet interfaces. This make the Linux box the NAT and I just place a...

load sharing between 256k DDN and 64k ISDN

I seem to recal that you can not do load sharing across unequal paths using OSPF. I know that EIGRP can do this type of loadsharing and uses the bandwith statements to determin the amount to distribute to each path. Also you will need to look at the queue style that in in effect. It needs to...
