Check that there are no spyware / malware applications running whilst connected to the net. These can be a huge drain on resources and can be viewed through process viewer in the task manager.

This is just a quick thought... If you are not even getting any POST output or POST beeps - have you checked the RAM you are using for integrity and suitability? I've often had faulty RAM (or a dodgy CPU) suppress the POST and VGA output.

I have had this problem with a PIII running a Geforce2 under Windows XP. It bottomed out at random points and always blue screened with the same VGA error.
I managed to resolve this by applying an updated driver from the manufacturer, since then, no problems! Unfortunately, XP...

Isn't this only the case when pure 2000 SQL databases are being backed up? I have SQL 2000 databases with SQL v7 compatibility mode backing up using the 6.61 agent.

By printing the backup schema you used in 'create backup job' and by grabbing a copy of the Arcserve job report you should be able to prove which files/folders it backed up and those it didn't. Omitted files are shown under their error codes (usually E3404 for sharing violations...
