Have a EMC Celerra NS502G (NAS Gateway). Want to do some DFS replication to an offsite storage location for reduncancy purposes. I know how to do DFS with Windows-based file systems, but don't know what options I have if any with an EMC Celerra NAS. Any guidance appreciated.

TZ170 as basic branch office router

I have 5 branch offices that will be on private MetroEthernet 10 Mbps WAN. I have several unused TZ170s (unlimited). Wondering if these work as basic IP router. Would need to turn off NAT, don't need RIP, don't need failover. Would connect to Cisco core router on other side of WAN. Any...

Windows server backup/restore to dissimilar hardware

Good advice Brett. We've been giving that option consideration. Recently VMWare announced that its VMWare Server (not ESX) will be free and Microsoft announced that its Virtual Server is free too. That gives many new low cost options for DR solutions by utilizing hardware virtualiztion.

    Two WAPs in Close Proximity

I thought (from some limited experience) you should be able to set the WAPs to different channels with same SSID, WPA-PSK and only require a single computer profile to roam between WAPs. I also think you want to put adjacent WAPs on non-overlapping channels (1,6,11) to ensure no interference...

    Backing Up XP Clients

To take Mark's good advice one step further: Marks Advice-"Eliminate all the info on the local machines all together. Use folder redirection to move the users My Docs to the server then you only need to backup the server data." That's what I do, but also set up off-line file synchronization...

    EMC SAN Beginner Training

Clariion LUN Alignment Offset (LBA) setting for Windows Host

I was told by someone much more experience than myself that when creating a new EMC Clariion LUN to be assigned to a Windows server, that the Alignment Offset (LBA) should be set to 63 (Even though it defaults to 0). Can anyone confirm or explain the necessity of this setting? thanks.

    Hiding shares with no permissions?

Netware file sharing beats Windows in 3 areas. 1. is as mentioned in this posting where folders where a user has no access are invisible 2. the Netware Salvage utility, which is like an undelete utility for files on the server. Windows requires a third-party add-on product for this. 3. Netware...

Site-to-Site VPN with static IP on ONLY one end

First, sign up for a free account with www.dyndns.org. Then, configure your router to automatically update the dynamic dns service when its IP address changes. It's a quick set up if your router supports it. (I have used both Netgear and Dlink firewall/routers that support it.)

For no cost solution: If the Netgear firewall/router/VPN device at Bldg. 1 supports dynamic dns update (like I know some netgear models do), then utilize that to overcome your dynamic IP issue on the building #1 end. Load whatever PC-based remote VPN client software that Netgear VPN requires...

A further thought related your Linksys situation with static/dynamic IP endpoints: Wonder if you could utilize a dynamic dns service like (free) www.dyndns.org for the dynamic IP endpoint so that even the static IP end could also initiate the vpn tunnel? So your Netgear router MAY or MAY NOT be the problem. troubleshooting Suggestion: I would install the MS VPN client on a PC that is on the same LAN as your Win2003 server that is hosting VPN connection. If that VPN connection works, then you know you have a Netgear router issue. If not...
