Did a 'man' on 'stty' still have not been able to successfully change the value of 'kill' from the @ symbol to something like '^u'.
Could someone let me know how to change this value?

Thanks for the information. I looked up the mt command and successfully used it to rewind my tape; however, could not use the 'erase' option. I did a man on mt on my machine and the erase option was not present. As an FYI I'm using HP-UX.
Is there another way to erase the tape?

You can use the PS1 variable as follows:
PS1="\$PWD =>"
That would at least get your location in the Unix prompt string. To avoid having to set this variable each time you login, you could set the variable in your .profile.

Thanks for the help, after inserting a new tape, I'll give my device name /dev/rmt/0m the next time I see the prompt.
As far as the -M option, I did try that one as 'tar -cvM' (and other flavors) to no avail, it was not recognized on my system.
When backing up a directory that will not fit on one tape I get the following prompt when the first tape is full.
"Tar: end of tape"
"Tar: to continue, enter device/file name when ready or null string to quit."
What should be my next steps from here to be able to insert...
