I have reduced "save autorecover info" right down to one minute and I can definitely type for a lot longer when it is on that setting.
Tried that and Word continued to crash in the same manner.
ok.. printer installed and Word crashed to black screen after a few minutes of furious typing..could it be faulty memory? will swap out the RAM tomorrow and also try another Graphics Card..worth a try I guess!

I have no PRINTER installed, and have installed no drivers. If Word needs a printer driver to function I guess it must be using a driver built into Windows.

Thanks,tf1, for your quick reply. Unfortunately the article didn't help me much as I can use Word for a while before it crashes and that scenario wasn't addressed . I have tried all of the relevant fixes in the article to no avail. Not sure waht to do next..could try a fresh windows install..but...

Hi!..LONG time no see.
This a new PC I have built myself. Everything works perfectly except that when I use Microsoft Word the PC goes to Black Sreen and hangs until I reset. I have reinstalled Word and problem remains.
I use MMJB 10 and if if I double click a track in the library it adds it to the playlist window...just keep double clicking the tracks you want to hear and they will build up in the playlist
OK the drive letter issue update!!
The next time I switched the ext drive it had changed from J: back to H:
Tried to change it back to J: in MY COMPUTER/manage/disc management but J: option not available!!
Restarted windows and tried again and J: option is there!!!
There's the solution!!!
