Tapes are Full..how do I reuse them???

Not sure which version your using, but recycling the tape may also be an option. This will keep you from having to do the process of re-labeling, and will retain all of the volume information (volume label, etc.). This would also have legato do the relabel/reuse instead of you having to do it. T

    Cisco - Sun Incompatibility?

Have you set the network card on the sun box to 100 full (sorry, wasn't sure if you meant the cards are set to 100 full or the ports on the switch)? If not, try the following (assuming that your using hme0 on the sun box): ndd -set /dev/hme instance 0 ndd -set /dev/hme adv_100hdx_cap 0 ndd...

    Rotation of listener.log

On second thought, I just gave it a try as this appears to be the only way to do it, and it worked fine. Thanks again, I guess I was just being paranoid. T

    Rotation of listener.log

Bev - I appreciate the input, but I have had issues in the past with simply nulling out the file, such as runaway memory consumption, etc. Basically the same results you would get from removing an active nohup.out file, for example. If you have done this in the past with no issues, great, but...

    Rotation of listener.log

I am dealing with a full partition on a solaris box due to a very mis-managed listener.log file (~55 MB). Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to shut the listener down, get the log file out of the way, and start the listener back up due to the database being one of our primary production...

boot - "Memory Address Not Aligned"

Actually, if it comes to that (and unfortunately it sounds like it might), check ebay. They used to have sparc 5 parts quite often. T

    Configuring Speakers

Oops! Mis-read your post, I see you've already tried that. What app are you using to play the sound? I've also found that the application has to be configured to use line out, otherwise it will override the audio control and play through the system speaker anyway. Sorry

    Configuring Speakers

Are you using a windows manager (CDE, for example)? You will need to go into the volume manager and turn off the speaker, making line out the default. I would give you specifics, but I'm using the Gnome 1.4 desktop on my current machine, so I don't think it would help much. If I remember...

    le1 in SPARC 5

ayjaycee, you're barking up the right tree. I just ran into this same issue (was mixing hme0 and le0, but doesn't make a difference). If you look at the network interface guide for sun, it mentions that older network cards may not use their internal MAC address, and therefore show the system...

Job Market for Unix Admin. Solaris 8

This is just my two cents, but if I were to have someone like you in a job interview, there would be no way that I would hire you on in a UNIX administration role. This is only going on the feeling that you have a lot of papers saying you know stuff, but no personal experience showing that you...

    Backup Index Replication

Maybe I'm missing something - what "data" are you talking about writing to disk? I'm not concerned so much with the speed of restoring information from tape vs. restoring it another way, I'm more worried about the time of getting the tape volume information into the server in order...

    Backup Index Replication

I am in the process of planning a hot (or at least warm) backup site for my data center, and I'm trying to determine the best way to have restores available in the quickest manner. The site will have similar servers and tape library to our current configuration. I was wondering if there is any...

i have a promblem in cdrom at insta

Is this the stock CD-ROM of the Ultra 5? If not, and it's been replaced with a CD-ROM for a PC, then the block sizes are different and the CD-ROM shouldn't boot (sometimes it does, but normally no). I believe Plextor is one of the few CD/CDRW drive manufacturers that make aftermarket drives...

Drive is empty, but thinks tape is mounted....

I've also needed to do an nsrjb -IE after -H on my library, apparently it gets REALLY confused and needs an inventory as well. I would try just -H first, just for times' sake. T

    Legato Networker Backup software

I agree with x2, a bit of a vague question. However, I've worked on both products, and they each have their good and bad parts. I found Veritas Netbackup a bit easier to work with when it came to various operation systems. I was doing backups of oracle on solaris and sql server on NT/2000...

fn 2 rn 0 read error I/O error

Larry - Thanks for the suggestion. I'm about 99% sure these came from a DLT7000 drive. It was a Storagetek 9710 which I doubt had 4000 drives although it DOES support that configuration. I'm trying to get verification (I never personally used the drives, and they aren't available to be...

    Exporting display to Windows

Depending on what your funds are, Exceed can also be used for the display. However, I would try VNC due to $$. Thanks T

    passive ftp

I know that wget (http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/wget.html) can do passive FTP. I've used it for grabbing entire sites, but it doesn't have to be used that way. I believe I've also used nftp, but that is not a free product, just to let you know. Thanks T

fn 2 rn 0 read error I/O error

I am in an odd situation of trying to recover data from networker tapes created at another site by a portion of my company that no longer exists. Upon running scanner to find the contents of the tapes, I receive the following: scanner: scanning dlt tape <tape #> on /dev/rmt/1cbn scanner: fn 2...
