    DNS problems

Kurt- Is this something that just started happening or did you just set up DNS? One thing I would check is the Root Hints tab under the DNS server properties settings (right click on the computer icon in DNS, not in your zones) Do you have any Root Hint servers listed? If you remove the...

    Desktop Question

Run gpedit.msc from command prompt. Check the GP setting under User configuration-Admin Templates-Windows Components-Windows Explorer-Turn on Classic Shell. If it is eneabled it will make the desktop tab dissappear. Change it back to 'Not Configured' and that should bring back your desktop tab.

I can no longer list printers in AD

Is it just printer shares on your fileserver that you're having issues with? Can you find other resources in AD like another user?

I can no longer list printers in AD

When you say you cannot "list" any printers in AD, do you mean you cannot see any printers in an 'Entire Directory' printer search? Or do you not see the shared printers hanging on the PC's when you try to add a printer via the 'Add a printer' wizard? Also what version is your server, 2000 or...

    Authentication Redundancy

Hello All! I hope my question is clear. I have a single Windows 2000 server (Standard) in my department set up with AD and managing roughly 50 XP Pro client machines. It's used mainly for Group Policy and File and Printer shares. I had an issue last week in which my server was freezing over the...

Where is my group policy enabled?`

secutanudu- If you have an XP Pro machine you can run the "Resultant Set of Policy" snap-in in the the mmc console. If you run it from an account that has domain admin rights you can probe any user/computer in your domain and see exactly what policy is controlling which enabled/disabled options...

    Password Policy

It looks like the Site level Policy is tied to the Local Group Policy. I had the Local GP set to enabled for password complexity. I went into the GP for the Default-First-Site-Name and changed the policy setting to disabled. After a minute or so the Local GP setting was changed to disabled. If I...

    Password Policy

It seems to me that by disabling the password complexity and/or minimum password length in the Default Domain Policy, that should do it. I went into Active Directory Users and Computers and changed the GP settings from there. I also tried changing the Default Domain Controller Policy. It did not...

XP critical update is giving me Blue Screen of Death

I cannot get into safe mode. I can get to the setup menu, but when I select safe mode, it then tries to enter safe mode, but it ends up just re-booting.

XP critical update is giving me Blue Screen of Death

I came in yesterday and 4 of my lab PC's that received the latest batch of critical updates were in a continual loop of rebooting. I had held off on installing service pack 2 until the semester was over (I work at a university). I had one PC that had not installed the latest critical updates so...

    Windows automatic update problem

denbigh97- Have you solved this issue yet? Same problem here on an XP Home machine.

    Authentication Question?

Haunter- You may want to post this issue in the Windows NT 4.0 Server forum. You more likely to get a response from an administrator that has run into this issue. Good luck!

    integrate corporate product key

jeremybarker- See the following link for setting up an answer file for an unattended installation. I believe instead of using a floppy disk for the answer file you can copy the answer file to your bootable CD. I too have slipstreamed SP1 into XP Pro and want to try to integrate my corporate...

    Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection.

Also, I believe RD can only be used when a password is set on the remote account. If your dad has RD running, but does not have a password set for his account it will not work. serhino320

    messenger pop ups

jblalock- If these are the ad pop ups associated with the NET SEND method then you may want to try stopping the messenger service. This is different from instant messenging. In your administrative tools folder goto services and stop the messenger service. After stopping the service remember to...

    DHCP explanation

Patty- Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 Dankelt- I'll check out the links. It seems to me that we must have a relay agent in place if a DHCP server on one subnet is servicing ip requests to clients on another subnet. Thanks again everyone!

    DHCP explanation

GrnEyedLdy, RIS needs DHCP so I need to have DHCP running. I guess it does appear to be back to a static ip scenario but if RIS wants DHCP I can play the game. BTW-Anyone have any suggestions regarding the multiple DHCP servers issue? What establishes one DHCP server as the primary ip issuer...

    DHCP explanation

Thanks Patty! I guess DHCP is not as trivial as one is led to believe. My network environment is a university. In my building we have 3 departments that each have W2K servers that run DHCP and service client machines in their respective department. The ip addresses allocated to me by our campus...

    DHCP explanation

Hi All! I'm running DHCP on a test server where I work and I cannot figure out some issues with how ip numbers are issued and validated. Setup of DHCP went smoothly and the server is issuing ip's to the the client computers that are requesting them. How do I restrict the issuing of ip...
