    Compaq Laptop Motherboard Compatibility

Hey!! Long time no post.. Anyway.. the time for trouble returns. Being an idiot, I spilt a glass of water on my beloved Compaq N800c laptop. Didn't like it very much, so I followed the compaq procedure for disassembly and completely dried it out with a hair dryer. Upon reassembly, nothing...

    MOBO Mishap (I think)

I recently bought an upgrade kit (2 months ago) which included: 1800+ Athlon XP CPU No-Name Mobo with recent AMI Bios; Mobo has SiS chipset with everything onboard 256mb Cheap RAM ATX Case with underrated power supply I installed my old parts which include: 4gb Seagate HDD 50x CDROM...

    Pro over Home

Nice to see a local on the forums! Yes, as far as I can determine the only difference is the lack of a box which does not faze me at all. I have looked at CyberWarriors links and the only downfall in Pro is the lack of Fast User Switching (so what?). I have ordered Pro and it will ship shortly. Sam

    Vid Card Switching

The SiS does use system RAM, as if I set it to 64MB then Windows only recognises 192mb instead of 256 etc. I agree that I will leave it and maybe upgrade to a better card when they get a bit cheaper. I also think that I may have destroyed my NVidia in this process as it no longer seems to make a...

    Power Supply

I in fact bought an upgrade kit which consisted of: AMD Athlon 1800+ 256MB SDRAM SiS chipset mobo with Lan, Sound, Modem, Graphics onboard ATX Case + PSU So it was the retailers responsibility to make sure the components were all suitable. I'm sorry I must have forgotten to mention it. Anyway...

    Pro over Home

I live in Australia and I've found a deal where I can buy XP Pro Academic for $185AUD but Home would cost me $5 more (not academic) I run a single home PC. Would I benifit more from Home or Pro? Sam

    Power Supply

I'd like to direct this tidbit at Martin (paparazi) as he has already helped me with this particular problem. refernce to "thread602-448289 took your advice and attempted to return the supply to the retailer, and he told me that I was very wrong and that even though the mobo manual said...

    Vid Card Switching

I have just upgraded to an Athlon 1800+ with a no-name mobo that carries an SiS chipset. The onboard graphics chip is an SiS 630/730 (or so it tells me). The motherboard has no manual apart from a basic jumper diagram. AMI Bios. What I need to know is how do I put my old graphics card in (NVidia...

    problem with cpu

Well that sounds damn strange to me, but as I've always maintained: a bit of a shake-up never does them any harm. It gives support to the "PC Violence" theory. Sam

    CPU Power Rating

So, are you saying that by just running my PC in it's present condition could damage it!? Wow. I thought it just might jam occasionally. Ok, I will definitely gat a new supply ASAP. Thanks for your help. Sam

    problem with cpu

OK... but now I wanna know how the computer talked without electrical input (I'll assume that you meant that the UPS cable wasn't delivering power) and I'm glad that you managed to fix your problem. Some things can be so damn ANNOYING!! Sam

    CPU Power Rating

OK, I've read the manual further and it tells me that a Duron requires only 14A of power, so I'll assume that the power pack was created for this processor. Sam

    problem with cpu

Correct me if I sound stupid, but if the PC doesn't reach BIOS, then where is the voice coming from? Isn't it logical to assume that the voice would be recorded in the BIOS? I'm sorry I'm not helping I'm just interested Sam

    PENTIUM & CELERON

Early celeron's came in at around 333mhz (1998) and were as dodgy as blazes. They were stabilized by 400mhz and have since become a vital part of the intel family. Here's my opinions on the chips: Pentium 1: Ancient, released again as Pentium Pro with MMX, barely reach 200mhz Pentium 2: Good...

    Back in time Windows 3.11

Concerning running Win95 on that PC, I can recall easily to the days when 95 came out and the Pentium was still as new as anything. The standard was 200mb HDD's and a 486 DX2/66 with under 32mb RAM. Plenty! You must remember that not a heap of free space is needed and applications barely took up...

    PC On or Off

Power Saving is Vital!!! I'd advise you to stick big signs up all over the place, or, does NT4 have hibernate? Because if it does, setup that for when people forget. Sam

    RPM

    I think I'll take the 40GB WD 7200 with 8MB cache as here in oz it's only $60AUD than a basic 20GB 5400. Sam

    CPU Power Rating

I've just upgraded to an Athlon XP 1800+ and I've read in the manual that it reguires a minimum of 22A of +5V. Further investigation of my power pack reveals an output of only 17A. What will be the effect of this and should I upgrade to a new pack? Sam
